About the Fellowship

Are you passionate about climate action, public service, and making a real impact at the local level? Montgomery County, Maryland, a national leader in climate policy, is seeking full-time Climate Fellows.

The Fellows will work in the County Executive’s Office on high-priority initiatives to advance Montgomery County’s ambitious climate goals. The County seeks an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2027 and a 100% reduction by 2035, while becoming climate resilient. The County’s 2021 Climate Action Plan provides a roadmap to meet these goals. This is a year-long, full-time fellowship intended for recent college and graduate school graduates (though open to everyone) with diverse backgrounds who have strong experience, education, or interest in climate, sustainability, and racial equity policy.

Position Details

Fellowship Dates: September 8, 2025 – May 29, 2026
Compensation: $20/hour, 40 hours per week

Location: Hybrid — remote and in-person at 101 Monroe Street, Rockville, MD

The Fellow will work closely with County climate staff, supporting projects such as:

  • Researching and developing policy recommendations
  • Engaging with County departments and community organizations
  • Supporting community engagement, events, and reports
  • Advancing climate equity initiatives
  • Producing the Climate Action Plan Annual Report
  • Other tasks based on County needs and Fellow’s interests
  • Digital communications, such as strategy and content for social media, newsletters

This is a hands-on opportunity to work across disciplines like energy, transportation, conservation, resilience, and governance.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking candidates who:

  • Have recently completed an undergraduate or graduate program or are enrolled in a graduate program part-time
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in climate change, sustainability, environmental justice, and/or local government
  • Are organized, collaborative, and strong communicators
  • Can work independently and in a fast-paced environment
  • Are diligent in research and have a high attention to detail

Submit a resume, brief cover letter, and a writing or communications sample (e.g., blog post, social media content, academic paper, policy essay, or visual outreach piece) to climate@montgomerycountymd.gov by May 30, 2025.  Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, early submission is encouraged.
