Active Rain Real Estate Blog, Then And Now

By
Real Estate Agent with MOOERS REALTY ME Broker License 106759

ActiveRain used to be a goldmine for real estate SEO.

For years, it ranked incredibly well on Google. Real estate agents could easily dominate local search results. Cranking out like busy little beavers the original not machined blog posts about listings, neighborhoods, or local real estate market updates.

But over time, major shifts in SEO algorithms and platform ownership changes diluted its effectiveness. So ActiveRain, then and now boiling down the nitty gritty.

As Johnny Cash would say to his band mates... "Boys, let's bring it all home."

johnny cash bringing it all home

Here’s a breakdown of what happened and why ActiveRain doesn’t work like it used to:

📉 1. Google Algorithm Changes (2011–Present)

  • Panda (2011) penalized thin or low-quality content and duplicate posts. Many ActiveRain blogs were cookie-cutter.

  • Penguin (2012) hit link schemes. Users who overlinked to their main site from ActiveRain lost ranking.

  • Mobile-first indexing & Core Web Vitals (2018–2021) made performance, speed, and mobile optimization matter more—and ActiveRain’s platform didn’t keep up technically.

  • Helpful Content Update (2022–23) prioritized original, authoritative content that’s directly on your own domain. Google began favoring content hosted on your site, not 3rd-party blogs like ActiveRain.

🏢 2. Change of Ownership & Investment Priorities

  • ActiveRain was acquired by Ben Kinney Companies (via KW-affiliated companies).

  • While they kept the community aspect alive, investment in platform technical SEO upgrades, speed, and mobile UX lagged.

  • The site became less of a lead-gen platform and more of a social network for agents to talk to each other—valuable, but not SEO-focused.

🧠 3. Content Ownership Shift

  • ActiveRain blogs live on their domain (activerain.com/your-name), so you don’t own the SEO benefit fully.

  • Google now prefers content hosted on your own domain (like yourwebsite.com/blog/houlton-maine-living).

  • Even if your post ranks, it drives traffic to ActiveRain, not your own branded site.

🚫 4. Diluted Authority

  • ActiveRain once had high domain authority, but it declined over time:

    • Too much repetitive or shallow content

    • Outdated formatting and tech

    • Loss of backlinks and user trust

✅ Is ActiveRain Still Worth It?

Only in a few specific cases:

  • For networking with other agents and sharing referrals

  • To repurpose content you already wrote (as a backup or teaser)

  • As a backlink if you're linking once to your main site

But for SEO? No—it’s far better to:

Post rich, local-focused blog content on your own real estate website.

So, do you create real estate website blog posts on your own domain and then use ActiveRain to "amplify" the content?

In broadcasting terms, your main fresh worthwhile content blog posts would beactive rain real estate blog uploaded consistently and "broadcast" via your main domain.

Then ActiveRain, your other social media platforms would be used like a smaller wattage translator to help fill in and extend the reach of your broadcast signal.

Kinda the same concept.

Do you have your own personal community flavor blog to let real estate buyers "taste" the unique locality where you are the home town authority? Or is ActiveRain one size fits all good enough?

How are you using ActiveRain TODAY and how does it differed from your past blogging habits?

I have been here off and on since 2006 and have lived through the changes.  I use Active Rain and have goals for what I post here as well as what I post on Google, Facebook, Linkedin and other platforms.  I have left Twitter as the politics was more than making connections.  You have a great blog with good insite. Have a safe holiday.

Good morning, Andrew. Some of this is "Greek" to me. However, I have been posting on my own wordpress website and indexing on google for quite a while. I post very little here that hasn't been already indexed on Google on my own website. Outside of my friendships here in the Rain, I see no value in this platform. So I use my content from my website blog to keep up with my friends.

I haven't written consumer directed content on AR in a few years.  However, I do find that some of my older AR consumer facing posts still index well and still get results.  For the most part, I think my Wordpress IDX pages are the most effective thanks to the dynamic content of changing listings.   I still find value in this community, I just don't participate with as many comments or writing as often as I did in years past.  Life got busier and priorities had to shift.

Hello Andrew - as life and each of us continues to change, it seems natural to think that AR has evolved in many ways.  That proof of the pudding may be food for thought or merely morsels of stuff left behind for those collecting the scraps.

The days when you tap tap hunt and peck a few sentences and hit publish. Then instantly, front page search engine placement happened but slowly faded away like a launched flare overhead Michael Jacobs.

Lots of new ways to show up organically means daily marketing exercise to achieve reach, a larger audience than just the neighbors living on both sides or across the street from your new property listing.

Good morning Andrew,

What a great overview of the changes in Active Rain and all on point! I have two outside websites and one to the community I serve. My Active Rain posts are linked to my websites and I have many in my sphere and community who follow. At this point in time with few years left it's working and I'm not inclined to spend a lot of time or money in upping my presence. As for Active Rain the friendships are golden and I love reading some fresh content from agents taking the time to post. I always admire your video presence..you are the "Maine" man! LOL!

Thank you Dorie Dillard Austin TX. We've all learned a lot around the AR University Campus. Real estate has changed a lot, so has how you blog and where.

Hi Andrew,

You have really good insight to the changes throughout the years and on SEO.  I never gave it much thought, but you have a lot of great insights.

Thank you Jeffrey Richman. Video is off the charts from so so many aspects but there is resistance which is sad. Video works hard 365-24-7. It's a Memorial Day Weekend and folks are gathered around their desktops, on big screen TV, tablets and their cell phones taking tours. IF IF you produce simple run and gun videos to give them on demand open houses!

There is no question that things are not what they used to be but there's still a value with the interaction as well as the learning that comes through.

Hi Andrew- There have been lots of changes here since I joined in 2008. Since I am retired, my reasons for continuing to read and blog have changed. The community keeps me coming back and I want to keep the dendrites firing.

Interaction on ActiveRain serves a lot of purposes and there is a wealth of knowledge to share rather retired, mid stream or just starting out Kathy Streib. It's important to keep showing up and to help new members feel you care they are here. Otherwise it's like a church that smells like BenGay. No young families, no middle age "filling" that is needed for a well rounded robust platform.

Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 you are correct, AR has gone through several changes since its inception in 2004.  It no longer produces the rankings it once did, but it is still a good learning platform, and for making connections with other Real Estate professionals throughout the country.

Hi Andrew, thank you for your insightful post. I probably should post first on my own website as you suggest and copy it to Active Rain for extra amplification as you say. Is this what you do?

Now, I post on Active Rain and take the AR RSS Feed to my website, but that does not do anything for SEO.  Jeff

Well, well that is straight talk and does in fact summarize the arc of AR that I have witnessed since 2008. Great, well thought out post Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 and I have since 2021 started posting my consumer-facing content exclusively on my website or first on my website and then a version of it here to share with the membership or I'll publish the first paragraph and then to read more you must click a link over to my website blog. Some things I only post here because they are Member-centric posts.
