If you’ve lived in Southeast Louisiana or for that matter anywhere on the Gulf Coast for more than a minute, you know the drill: June through November isn’t just summer—it’s hurricane season.
I’ve lived through Katrina, Ida, Zeta—you name it. And while each storm has its own story, one thing remains the same: preparation makes all the difference. As a Realtor and former law enforcement officer, I’ve seen what happens when folks are ready—and when they’re not.
Let’s keep it simple and smart this season.
🧰 Joe’s Hurricane Prep Checklist for Homeowners
1. Check Your Insurance (Seriously).
Make sure your homeowner’s policy covers wind and flood damage. Review your deductible and keep a printed and digital copy on hand. If you’re not sure where to start—call me. I’ll point you in the right direction.
2. Secure the Outside.
Trim trees, bring in anything that can fly (yes, even that cute patio chair), and make sure gutters are clear.
3. Build Your Emergency Kit.
You’ll want:
- Bottled water (1 gallon per person per day for 3 days)
- Non-perishable food
- Flashlights & batteries
- Phone chargers (especially a battery backup)
- First aid kit
- Pet supplies
4. Have an Evacuation Plan.
Know where you're going, how you're getting there, and make a list of must-grab items (meds, documents, keepsakes). Fill up that gas tank early.
5. Backup Your Docs.
Deeds, insurance, ID—scan or snap photos and save them in the cloud. Keep a hard copy in a waterproof zip folder too.
💡 Pro Tip for Sellers:
If you're listing your home, buyers want to know it’s storm-ready. Show off that new roof, storm shutters, or elevated foundation—it adds value.
