AN ACT OF KINDNESS; BANANAS, GARDEN, BUTTERFIIES

By
Real Estate Agent with Laer Realty Partners Bowen

The few months that I have been a member of the AR community, I have read some wonderful stories about our furry friends (mainly cats & dogs). I was on Facebook the other day and the post below captured my attention. The following words drew me to read the post, "simple act of kindness.' I thought I'd share it with the AR community - especially for gardeners, butterfly lovers, those with insect interest, and those who are curious to learn to new things.

Because I have always held the view that an act of kindness is about people doing something good for other people, I have never thought that an act of kindness could apply to insects. Yes, a butterfly can be either an animal or insect. Butterflies belong to the class Insecta, which is a sub-group of animals called anthropods.

Below is a simple way to attract butterflies to your garden. The post was posted by 'Sisterhood Connecting as One.'
✅✅✅A banana hanger is a simple way to attract butterflies to your garden. Here's how to make one:
Materials:
1. Banana
2. String or twine
3. A branch or hook
Instructions:
1. Peel the banana partially or fully, depending on your preference.
2. Tie the string or twine around the top of the banana peel.
3. Hang the banana from a branch or hook in a sunny spot.
✅✅Butterflies like ripe fruit, especially bananas, and will be attracted to the sweetness. This method can also attract other beneficial insects like bees and hummingbirds. Enjoy watching these beautiful creatures visit your garden!

Good morning Joe. We no longer reside in a dwelling where we can have a garden but if we di, I would definitely try the banana suggestion to attract butterflies. I was not aware of the tactic. Thanks! Enjoy your day.

Hello Joe - I continue to believe nature offers non-stop entertainment possibilities.  And the observations are diverse and abundant.  Thankfully.

I agree with you Michael. What is so wonderful about nature's non-stop entertainment possibilities is that it is all around us at all times.

How interesting, Joe. I love butterflies. I'll have to test out this way to attract them. I almost never see butterflies in my area.

The birds in my yard look forward to apple peels in the trees and citrus keeps them happy in the winter.  I am sure the neighbors will think I fell on my head when I start putting bananas out, but I will try to get butterflies to come to the yard too.  Thanks for the tip.

Gwen - sounds like you already attract birds with apple peels. I agree, your neighbors might think you fell on your head when you start putting bananas out, but the beauty you will attract will be worth it; they might love it?  I appreciate your comment.

My girlfriend spends quite a bit of time planting butterfly plants (that help feed the butterflies and bring them back for more).

Joe Mojica - My butterfly plants are attracting butterflies, and I love watching them! There is such an intimate connection between peace and tranquility. I have not heard of the banana trick. I'll have to give it a try.

Patricia - prior to the banana tactic, we have always bought butterfly plants because we love butterflies. Like you said, with butterflies there is an intimate connection between peace and tranquility. To me, butterflies bring color, a feeling of peace, gentleness, and a flow of grace.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story, Joe Mojica, and the charming idea of attracting butterflies (and other beneficial insects) to our gardens through simple acts of kindness. It’s inspiring to see how something as straightforward as hanging a banana can foster a connection between humans and nature, encouraging biodiversity and the enjoyment of outdoor spaces. Thanks for reminding us that kindness in all forms - whether to people or insects - can make a difference.

Lew - I agree with you that a simple act of hanging a banana peel can foster a connection between humans and nature. Better yet, an act of kindness does not have to confine itself to only humans; we can apply it to something as small as an insect. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Joe Mojica this is a great idea!  And you can bet I'll be hanging a banana in my garden!  We also have a lot of birds that are attracted to our water fountain and it's so fun to watch them all play with each other. I hope with our temperatures hovering in high 90's right now the banana lasts long enough for the butterflies to enjoy!  Please come on over and join the BananaTUDES group!  Perfect post for our fun group!
