Hurricane Season is Here!

Hurricane Season is Here!

STOP Right There! Before you say, “But we don’t have hurricanes where I live,” you need to be prepared for any type of disaster…natural or manmade. Hurricane Season is here!

For the majority of my years on earth, I’ve lived near the coast.  The first hurricane I remember was Carla in 1961. Since that time, I’ve lived through countless hurricanes in Houston, Florida (remember Andrew), and the Bahamas, as well as tornadoes in Houston, the Bahamas, and Northern VA.

No matter where you live, it’s a good idea to have a plan - know what you would do.

First

Have a plan and write it down.  When you are calmly thinking about what you’d take or do, it seems easy. However, what if you only had 5 or even 10 minutes?  Our reactions may be quick however, our rising adrenaline can get in the way of knowing exactly what to do.

Second

Do your research.

~ If you have pets, do shelters near you accept them?

~If a tornado were to hit your area, do you know which room would be your safe room?

In May 2024, the Houston area had a derecho that behaved much like a tornado. Larry and I headed to our pre-chosen safe room with our phones and devices.

~Where would you go?

If you had to evacuate, do you know where you would or could go?

Third

Know what you would take if you had to leave.

Don’t rely solely on the cloud for your backups. During one of last year’s storms, some areas in our region lost internet access, and in some places, even cell service was down.

Don’t forget deeds, wills, medical information, financial, and insurance papers.
You’ll also need medications for you and your pets, toiletries, devices and chargers, etc. What would you need if you had to be away from your home for more than a day?!

Fourth

Make a list of items you would need to have at home in an emergency. More to come on that!

Even though I’ve experienced more than a few hurricanes, I can still learn something new to add to my list or that I’d do differently.

Make your plan based on what you and your family and pets would need! And…don’t wait.

Hello Kathy, I guess I am lucky living in Denver now but my sister is in Florida and I worry about her all the time once this season starts.  Can I reblog this?

Kathy my 10,000 watt Generac generator is ready to go.  I have not had to use it in a few years, and hope I don't have to use it this year.  But better to have it and be ready, than not!

We have had a bit of Sahara dust in the last week. I think it has brought the ocean temps down a little. Hoping for a mild season.

" Have a plan and write it down."

Most of what I do, including daily activities, starts with a written list. I don't know what I would do without my lists. LOL

I'm the same way, Sharon Tara Usually, once I write it, I'll remember it.

Kathy this is such an important list to keep track of all year round. Obviously we're not in hurricane lane but we do get some pretty powerful monsoon rains with horrible dust storms and wind which sometimes cuts off the power (very rarely) but when they are bad they are really bad.  We were almost flooded out on 3 sides of our house many years ago,.....that was crazy.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten that's the thing...you don't have to live where there are hurricanes. It's good to know where things are and what you would need IF you had to leave.

Lived in Florida for a while and never had one.  But on the base at Ft.  Benning I was on patrol when one passed over and I remember the earieness of being in the eye of it.  But one thing the military taught me was to be prepared.  So we try.

Great advice. Having lived in the Houston area for 35 years and now in the tornado alley of North Texas, these are excellent reminders to stay prepared.

Kathy, if we have to get prepared for a hurricane in CO, something is wrong!   We may get rain from a system, but even that is rare.

Hi Kathy,

I remember hurricane season all too well.  When I lived in S. FL., I went through four majors (4's and 5) and many "smaller" ones.  We lost our home about 18 years ago to Hurricane Wilma and Jean and Francis before that, weren't too kind either.  BE PREPARED!

Great job Kathy!  Your list is perfectly prepared for anyone to be ready for hurricane season.  Knowing what to do with a list of action items is the best way to be prepared!

All of your advice is great.  Tornado locations especially are spur of the minute and to me, the most dangerous situations.  While I thought Floridians were immune to tornados, not true.  When they forecast a pathway for a hurricane though, I am skeptical.  If something is forecast to come over Orlando any stronger than a 2, and it is a for sure situation, I am out of Florida.  No reason to hang around. :)

My corner of SC is over 250 miles from the coast but Helene found us, tore up trees, took down power lines and the flooding displaced 1000's of people.  We are recovering but not because the government stepped in with money-- we are recovering because the communities got behind neighbors and took care of things.  We still have downed trees and are still working on clearing trails in the forest, downed trees from the river banks and general road clean up and repair.  I hope this season will be better.
