The national food holiday may seem all about free donuts on the surface, but its roots date back to World War I.
National Donut Day, first celebrated in 1938 in Chicago, honors the Salvation Army's Donut Lassies — a group of women volunteers who baked and delivered donuts to soldiers on the front lines during World War I.
According to the Salvation Army, the Donut Lassies are credited with popularizing donuts in the United States after troops returned from Europe.
The holiday is celebrated each year on the first Friday in June.
