As real estate professionals and homeowners know, small maintenance issues can quickly snowball into big expenses, (especially when it comes to water usage). Did you know that a hidden leak can significantly increase your water bill, even if you never see a drop on the floor?

A leaky toilet, for example, often goes unnoticed until the damage is done. Unlike a dripping faucet, which you can hear and see, a toilet leak can silently waste hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water each month. Toilets are one of the most common sources of household leaks that we encounter as plumbing professionals, and most times they are overlooked until they start affecting your water bill or worse, damage your property.

7 Signs Your Toilet Might Be Leaking

  • You have to jiggle the handle to stop the toilet from running
  • The toilet makes noise even when no one has used it
  • Water is running over the overflow tube inside the tank
  • You need to hold the handle down fully for a proper flush
  • Water trickles into the bowl long after flushing
  • The tank refills on its own, even though it wasn’t flushed
  • The toilet bowl is constantly sweating or has condensation

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, there’s a good chance your toilet is leaking. Fortunately, most of these issues are caused by worn parts and are usually easy and affordable to fix when detected early on.

Fix That Leak Before It Costs You

As mentioned above, even a minor leak can waste hundreds of gallons of water a year, and all that wasted water still appears on your utility bill. That’s money literally going down the drain. If you’re a homeowner, landlord, or property manager, fixing leaks early is one of the simplest ways to prevent future headaches and protect your investment.

Water costs in our area have always been low.  Then the city decided to add a new intake and treatement center.  With more pressure comes more broken pipes.  The biggest finding at the hardware store was the new pressure was causing the pressure regulator on the waterlines coming from the meter into the house were failing. Hello Nelson - addressing small issues before they grow is a good idea.  However, stuff seems to get in the way.  The plumbing connection is apparent in this comment.
