During dinner last night we heard a fairly large noise but as there is so much going on in our neighborhood this Spring it didn't give me cause to get up from our table. It did make Timmothy jump up and this is what he saw in our backyard.
This was a good sized limb, approximately 25' in length. If you look at the tree you can see where it came from. Prior to falling it shot straight upward.
Most surprising to each of us was that it was not windy when this happened and the limb appeared to be healthy. So what happened?
We don't know for sure but upon close inspection of the point where it seperated from from the tree (both the branch and the trunk) there were a lot of small insects under the bark. The wood itself looked very healthy with no sign of insects in the actual wood.
Two Life Lessons
Corruption often ligers just below the surface. This holds true of giant trees and well as giant peoples. It also holds true of building materials
If you want trees on your property expect routine maintenance as well as unexpected maintenance.
Good News
In regards to this incident. Nothing was damaged even though it fell on my firepit and a storage crate. Clean up was a family activity that only took an hour because of preparedness learned from prior incidents. I took on the large stuff with a chainsaw while Timmothy and Carol took to the smaller stuff with hedge trimmers. We bundled all the small stuff and it's ready for the City to pickup tomorrow.
