Sometimes Giants Fall

By

During dinner last night we heard a fairly large noise but as there is so much going on in our neighborhood this Spring it didn't give me cause to get up from our table. It did make Timmothy jump up and this is what he saw in our backyard.

This was a good sized limb, approximately 25' in length. If you look at the tree you can see where it came from. Prior to falling it shot straight upward.

Most surprising to each of us was that it was not windy when this happened and the limb appeared to be healthy. So what happened?

We don't know for sure but upon close inspection of the point where it seperated from from the tree (both the branch and the trunk) there were a lot of small insects under the bark. The wood itself looked very healthy with no sign of insects in the actual wood.

Two Life Lessons

Corruption often ligers just below the surface. This holds true of giant trees and well as giant peoples. It also holds true of building materials

If you want trees on your property expect routine maintenance as well as unexpected maintenance.

Good News

In regards to this incident. Nothing was damaged even though it fell on my firepit and a storage crate. Clean up was a family activity that only took an hour because of preparedness learned from prior incidents. I took on the large stuff with a chainsaw while Timmothy and Carol took to the smaller stuff with hedge trimmers. We bundled all the small stuff and it's ready for the City to pickup tomorrow.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .For Timmothy's website type timmtimmothy.com into your browser. I tried to put it in a link here but it refuses to work. Do NOT put anything in front of timmtimmothy.com or it will not work.

Snow, ice & wind will do a lot of damage Bob Jakowinicz . We had a September storm like that several years ago while the trees had all their leaves. A large chunk of the State lost power for days.

Hi Bob,
Glad to hear nothing was permanently damaged and clean-up fairly quick. Nice analogy with life lessons. Corruption and danger are not always visible.

Thank you Carol Williams . We have had several surprises in our City government in the last year including the Mayor sending a video of himself masterbating to a fellow employee. It is so stupid that people in power think they can get away with such idiocy.

Hello Bob and I had a neighbor tree fall from a snow weigh in January and came down on our friend.  I cut up my portion that was in my yard and need to replace 4 pickets yet.  As for the name, he still has his portion in his yard and has not done anything yet.

I would find your neighbors neglect annoying Will Hamm unless I knew there was some kind of hardship involved.

Hi Bob- I'm glad no one was hurt!!!  We had to remove two tall pine trees last year because of some kind of insect infestation.

I am hoping that it's an isolated incident, or should I say branch Kathy Streib , there is a whole lot of BIG lumber hanging up there. 😊

I can imagine that would be loud and cause for concern.  It doesn't appear to have done too much damage, though.  Is the grill got knocked over, haha.

I hardly heard it Brian England but there was a baseball game going on across the street and there is a lot of construction in the neighborhood with heavy equipment building a dike to prevent further flooding of our neighborhood. What looks like a grill is actually my firepit. It is made out of heavy steel and did not take a direct hit so it's good to go.
