5 Must-Know Factors To Choosing The Right Real Estate Agent

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty 179530

Choosing the right real estate agent is one of the most important steps in navigating today’s real estate market. Navigating today’s complex real estate market without guidance is like taking a cross-country trip without a GPS. Whether you’re listing your beloved family home or hunting for your dream property, having the right real estate agent by your side can make all the difference.

In today's challenging real estate market, having the right professional by your side can make a difference of over $55,000 in your final sale price, according to recent NAR data.

According to a 2024 report from the National Association of Realtors, homes sold with agent representation had a median sale price of $435,000—significantly higher than the $380,000 median for properties sold directly by owners.¹

I recently published a comprehensive guide that walks you through the essential factors to consider when selecting a real estate agent, who truly represents your interests, whether you're buying or selling.

5 Must-Know Factors for Choosing the Right Real Estate Agent

  • Learn the critical difference between buyer's and listing agents
  • Discover what credentials actually matter in today's market
  • See how local market knowledge translates to better outcomes
  • Understand what questions to ask before signing any agreement

Would you like to discuss how these factors specifically apply to your situation? I'm offering complimentary 15-minute consultations this week to answer any questions about your real estate plans.

Nina, great post for buyers and sellers to ask lots of questions when hiring their REALTOR.  We are NOT all created equal.

Joan Cox hi Joan... I've often said that many people take more time selecting a handbag at Nordstrom's than selecting their agents. And I find many agents don't have a clue on how to articulate their value so the public thinks we all are alike, talk alike, walk alike, sound alike.

Nina Hollander, Broker - So true!  Transactions in Charlotte with NEW Agents, or those who haven't had but 2 transactions in the last 3 years are definitely more difficult!  Sellers and Buyers are much better off working with an Agent who has extended local market knowledge, it always leads to better, cleaner, happier closings!

Eleanor Thorne hi Eleanor, the problem with agents who don't have years of experience behind them and who don't do but a few transactions each year is that they never develop the "muscle memory" on how to handle listings and purchases.

Hi Nina,
When I was active, I was often surprised at how little thought was put into choosing an agent. Some people simply don't understand that there IS a difference.

Carol Williams so true, Carol. I've often said the many people spend more time selecting a pair of shoes or a handbag at Nordstrom's than they do selecting an agent.

When we have valid reasons (does not matter if it is four, five or six reasons) for choosing an agent...and we follow those reasons, we have the best chance of making a good decision.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hi Jeff... it's a process and lots of people don't always understand there is more to selecting an agent than someone who responds to you from a sign up on line.

Nina Hollander, Broker  some people see what the agent does and when it comes time to settle can't believe what they paid for so little service.

Not all agents are the same and sole representation does have its value and as you note gets one more money.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 good morning, Ed. Sadly, those agents who have not "earned their keep" have the public thinking we are all the same. It really is up to us to articulate our value.

George Souto good morning, George... since there's usually another agent on the other side of each transaction, I've had the same experience and yes there is a huge difference.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX amen to that, Dorie... I hear so much "fake news" from people about the real estate market. I keep telling them stop reading headlines and speak with your trusted professional to get the real story.
