Points for a Purpose
“1 in every 3 adults in Harris County has low functional literacy, meaning they do not have the skills they need to function for their roles on the job, in their family, or in society.”
After reading posts from Kathleen Daniels, Dorie Dillard, and Nina Hollander for this month's challenge, I was inspired to use my points for a cause that has been important to me since college.
Literacy!
Yes, I’ve written about this many times, so bear with me. After grad school, I did psychological testing for those recently released from prison. Before I administered any tests, I had to determine their reading level. Anyone below the third-grade reading level had the tests read to them via a recorder.
What would have taken us 45 minutes to take turned into 1 ½ hours or more for them. I couldn't believe how many people could not read at the 3rd-grade level.
A person’s ability to read and understand what they read is critical for them and our society. Everything we do in life…our work, having a family, having a fulfilling life...requires that we can read.
I would turn my ActiveRain points into funding on two fronts.
First and foremost...target at-risk children and families where reading is not the norm BEFORE they fall behind their classmates.
LITERACY NOW, located in Houston, goes into elementary schools and works with children and their parents. It has the Reading Express that takes reading into neighborhoods as well.
They also partner with the Harris County Public Library, targeting juveniles in the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department.
The second target for my ActiveRain points to dollars would be to fight adult literacy rates. Those points to dollars would go to the Harris County Public Library.
They assist adults with improving their reading skills so they may get their high school diploma or take the U.S Citizenship test. There are ESL (English as a Second Language) classes.
Every child in our wonderful country deserves the opportunities you and I have had. At the very least, we owe them the opportunity to learn to read and write.
You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them. Ray Bradbury
