JUNE IS NATIONAL HOMEOWNERSHIP MONTH 🏡🗝️

REASON #6 TO OWN A HOME, NOT RENT

YOU, NOT YOUR LANDLORD, DECIDE HOW TO DECORATE YOUR HOME

Decorating your home any way you want is a great reason to own your home.

When you rent a home, it's your landlord—not you—who decides how it can be decorated. So while it might feel like your "castle," a rented home rarely allows for the personal touches that truly make a space your own. Most rental or lease agreements strictly limit what changes you can make—if any—without prior written permission from the landlord. And even if you're granted permission, it's often with the condition that you restore everything to its original state before moving out—at your own expense. Make unauthorized changes, and you could even risk eviction.

From a landlord’s perspective, this restriction makes sense. Tenant-made changes could reduce the property's value or create zoning or code violations that cost money to fix.

Even if your improvements would add value, ask yourself this: why invest your own time, money, and energy into upgrading a property you don’t own and won’t benefit from in the long term? Most landlords won’t reimburse you for improvements—even though they’ll benefit from them after you leave.

So, if you’re eager to express your inner interior designer and truly make a space your own, owning your home—not renting—is the way to go!

YES! This is so important to me Nina Hollander, Broker . While overall I like white walls I want the freedom to add color if I want. I want to make improvements and I do on a regular basis. This is also why I could not live in a HOA (plus how loud and long I wish to party).

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... that is where we differ... I would not live in a non-HOA neighborhood. I see too many neighborhoods in some form of disrepair because there is no HOA.

Nina this one is huge for me, and like Bob "RealMan" Timm said in his comment above, it is one of the major reasons why would not be a good fit for a home in a HOA.

As a landlord Nina, I am afraid too many time tenants have not cared and done their decorating to their tastes without asking.  Constant upkeep.  m

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho hi Mark, I've seen some horrors in investment properties that landlords have asked me to sell.

I truly feel bad for those who are stuck renting because there are so many more benefits associated with homeownership!

Brian England hi Brian... unfortunately, for many people who are "stuck" renting they put themselves into that situation.
