Friday the 13th...
What Do You Think... Is It Lucky? Is It Cursed? Is It Just Another Day?
Ā
"Don't be superstitious. Nothing will happen on Friday the 13th that cannot happen on Saturday the 14th."

Ā
Itās Friday the 13th! Is today just another Friday for you, or does the date give you pause? Some people avoid travel, cancel plans, or tread carefully on Friday the 13th, while others barely notice itās even on the calendar. Whether you lean into superstition, dismiss it entirely, or treat it like a personal lucky charm, this date has long captured the imagination.
Ā
Fact: Did you know that every month that begins with a Sunday has a Friday the 13th? If you are superstitious about this day, good news! In 2025 there is only one Friday the 13th (today)!

A Brief History of Friday the 13th
Interestingly, the idea of Friday the 13th being unlucky didnāt really exist before the 19th century. While the number 13 has long had mixed associationsāviewed as unlucky in some cultures and lucky in othersāit wasnāt historically tied to any specific day of the week. The fear of Friday the 13th seems to be a relatively modern invention. That said, Friday itself did carry some negative associations in Christian tradition, likely because it was believed to be the day of Christās crucifixion.
Ā
Pop Culture and Friday the 13thĀ
In the 20th century, Friday the 13th became firmly entrenched in the popular imagination, thanks in part to books, movies, and media coverage. Thomas W. Lawsonās 1907 novel Friday, the Thirteenth centered around a stockbroker who uses the superstition to trigger a Wall Street panic. Then, in 1980, the horror film Friday the 13th debuted, cementing the dateās reputation as a day of bad luck.
Ā
Today, the superstition is so common that some people genuinely alter their behavior: airlines report fewer bookings, hotels skip the 13th floor.
Ā
Or... Is Friday The 13th A Lucky Day?
Of course, not everyone sees Friday the 13th as something to dread. Some cultures embrace the number 13 as lucky. Ā Most Asian cultures consider the number lucky and in Judaism it's also considered a lucky and spiritually significant number. In Italy, 13 is associated with prosperity and life, while in some pagan traditions, itās connected to the lunar calendar and femininity.Ā
Ā
Personally, 13 is my lucky numberāI even wear a gold ā13ā charm on my bracelet. So when the 13th lands on a Friday, I donāt feel the need to worry. In fact, I once heard someone say, āIf you think Friday the 13th is scary, try going a day without coffee!ā Now thatās something I truly fearāand wholeheartedly agree with!

"I'm not nearly as afraid of Friday the 13th as I am of the people who are afraid of Friday the 13th."

Paraskevidekatriaphobia!Ā Ā Triskaidekaphobia!
SAY WHAT!?!? Fear of Friday the 13th is so pervasive in our society that the fear actually has an official name: paraskevidekatriaphobia!Ā The fear of the number 13 also has an official name -- triskaidekaphobia! And while I have no fears of the day or the number 13, I do have a fear of trying to correctly pronounce or spell the names of these phobias! But I don't think they have a term for that particular fear.
