ActiveRain’s Point Store Challenge has us dreaming big,1,000,000 imaginary points equals $100,000 real dollars to donate however we choose. Whether it’s passion projects, community causes, or personal dreams, anything goes. For my second point-spending adventure, I’m riding high with a cause close to my heart, and one that involves some very special four-legged therapists.
Let me re-introduce you to the incredible ROCK – Ride On Center for Kids in Georgetown, Texas. For over 26 years, this incredible nonprofit has been changing lives through the healing power of horses. ROCK serves children, adults, and veterans with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges through equine-assisted services that build strength, confidence, and independence, one ride at a time.
Now here’s where it gets personal: my fabulous friend and fearless travel buddy, Laurie West, is a proud ROCK volunteer, affectionately known as a ROCKateer. Laurie’s not just dipping her toes in the hay, she’s a certified horse handler who has gone through extensive training to lead therapy horses and assist riders. Rain or shine, she’s out there with her crew (aka “The Regulators”) making sure every session goes off without a hitch, or with a well-secured one!

In fact, this evening she’s being honored at the ROCK 430 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, and I couldn’t be prouder. Her dedication inspires me to do more than just cheer from the sidelines. That’s why I’m gifting 200,000 points from my imaginary ActiveRain stash to ROCK, so they can continue expanding their programs, enhancing facilities, and reaching even more amazing individuals.
If you ever have the chance to visit ROCK or support their mission, I highly recommend it. There’s something magical about the connection between horses and humans, and at ROCK, that magic is real.
Let’s just say… my points are riding off into the sunset for a very good cause. Because when it comes to giving, ROCK truly ROCKs!
