Changing Young Lives Through Golf

By
Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

“Success in this game depends less on strength of body than strength of mind and character.” – Arnold Palmer

For my shopping spree in the ActiveRain Point Store this month, I'm giving 200,000 points for the First Tee youth golf program in Central Washington. This is equivalent to $20,000.

Youth Development Through Golf:
First Tee merges golf instruction with character education, teaching kids aged 5 - 18 how to manage emotions, set goals, be a team player, use good judgment... and more in a fun environment.

The program is not just about swing mechanics: it's a hands-on class in life skills. As indicated in the Feature Image above, the FirstTee Program curriculum incorporates nine core values.

Our First Tee of Central Washington operates in both the Yakima and Wenatchee Valleys. This regional program serves roughly 550 youth annually:
400 in Yakima
150 in Wenatchee

My gift will empower even more participants to attend, regardless of financial need.

With or without my gift, no one is turned away. Registration fees are modest, and financial aid is provided for those who need it. My $20,000 contribution, though,  can support several dozen kids in the program.

We are not alone in our efforts. This nationwide organization has 51 chapters.

The program thrives thanks to local volunteers and coaches, including assistant mentors who don’t have to be expert golfers. My gift will help strengthen the program by funding coach training, scholarships, and events.

First Tee alumni nationwide credit the program for personal breakthroughs, gaining the confidence to speak publicly, lead community projects, or overcome challenges like autism. These transformations happen locally, too. Every gift helps in some way.

$20,000 isn’t a drop in the bucket for a local nonprofit... it’s a multiplier of possibilities:

  1. New coaches can be hired and trained, increasing program frequency

  2. Leagues, camps, and clinics can expand, reaching more kids

  3. New equipment and safety support ensure high-quality, inclusive access

Each year,  contributions help expand the circle of opportunity, potentially doubling the number of kids it reaches.

Fun Fact: Several PGA and LPGA Pros got their start in the First Tee Program.

While only a small percentage of First Tee participants go on to play professionally, thousands go on to become collegiate golfers, coaches, business leaders, and community mentors. Many receive college scholarships and remain lifelong ambassadors for the game of golf.

Some of you may recall, that part of my epic road trip in 2021 was raising money for First Tee.  It did raise several thousand dollars.

In addition to my 200,000 fictional AR Points donation, First Tee has been named as a Charitable bequest in my Will.

That is a great use of points to develop the game, but more importantly the character and life lessons that it nurtures.

Hi Coach Carol!   First Tee is such a great program for kids!  Several of my the youngest members of my family have been through the program and they're still playing golf and doing so well in school too.  It's an all around program to build kids up for success in life.  Great entry!!

I'm trying to remember where I was last week where there were a bunch of kids out on the driving range. It warms my heart.

Carol Williams I think that golf is an excellent youth sport, and my wife and I got my granddaughter a small set of youth golf clubs.  We do not push her to play the game, but do encourage her to make golf one of her primary activities.  She enjoys the game, but has not committed to it yet.  I will gladly pay for any fees she would incur with First Tee once she commits to the sport.

Hi George Souto
The fee for First Tee is very nominal, but "scholarships" are available to anyone who needs them.

Hi Joan Cox
I see you're staying connected while on your trip.  It's definitely a great program for kids. Some take to it, some don't and that's ok.

Carol Williams there hasn't been much to do, it was POURING rain yesterday, so no boat trip on the lake.  Didn't want to walk around in the rain, so stayed in and relaxed.   Sometimes those days are good too.  Just got into Detroit, and tomorrow into Indiana, outside Chicago.

Even though I am supporting youth golf, one of the things I love most about it is that we can play well into our Golden Years. It's a lifelong sport.

What a wonderful charitable points post.  LOVE this idea.  Being in a sport gives so much to a young athlete and those core values listed are excellent.  Did not know you raised thousands.  Good for you!!  Excellent idea :)

Hi Carol:

What a wonderful, and very generous, way to spend some AR points to benefit such a worthwhile organization. First Tee sounds like a very special program that benefits hundreds of area youth and teaches them some valuable lessons.
