Why Your Comments Can Boost Your Search Results

How Engaging Online Can Improve Your Visibility and Relationships

Why Your Comments Matter More Than You Think

Ever wonder if those quick replies or generic comments actually make a difference? The truth is, your interactions in blog comments can do a lot more than just fill a page. When you leave meaningful comments, search engines see you as an active, engaged participant. They index your words, which can show up in search results, boosting your visibility. Plus, genuine interactions build relationships that last longer than a fleeting comment.

How Comments Influence Search Engines

You might think comments are just small talk, but they’re more like digital footprints. Search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo crawl these comments to understand who’s involved and what they’re saying. When your comments add value, they signal that you’re a real person, not just an algorithm. That’s why thoughtful, relevant comments can help your content rank higher.

For example, my comments on ActiveRain posts show how engaging with content boosts my profile. Just Google my name (Lew Corcoran) and you’ll see. When you reply to others with helpful insights or even a bit of humor, search engines recognize you as an active member of the community. This can lead to your name and website appearing more frequently in search results.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Comments

Many people think a quick “Nice post” or “Thanks for sharing” will do the trick. Sadly, that’s a missed opportunity. Such comments are often ignored by search engines and don’t help your SEO (or is it AEO now?). Plus, they don’t foster relationships.

Another mistake is leaving comments that are overly promotional or generic. This can come across as spammy and could hurt your reputation. Instead, focus on adding meaningful insights or asking questions that spark conversation. That way, your comments become part of the community fabric.

Tips for Effective Commenting

First, always read the post thoroughly. Then, leave a comment that adds value. For example, share an experience, ask a relevant question, or offer a helpful tip. Humor can be a great icebreaker, but keep it appropriate. Remember, your words are visible to everyone to see, so be authentic.

Second, be consistent. Regular participation shows search engines you’re serious about engaging. Use tools like Google Alerts or Mention to monitor your interactions and see how they perform.

Lastly, don’t forget to link your website or social profiles in your comments when appropriate. This can drive traffic back to your platform and strengthen your online presence.

The Power of Genuine Engagement

Think about it. Your comments are a chance for you to stand out. When you genuinely connect with others, you create trust and authority. Over time, that can translate into leads, referrals, and better search rankings.

So, next time you’re tempted to leave a quick comment or skip it altogether, remember this: your words matter. They can boost your visibility, build your reputation, and can even help you grow your business.

In Conclusion

Your online interactions aren’t just chatter. They’re a vital part of your digital footprint. By leaving thoughtful, sincere comments, you signal to search engines that you’re engaged and trustworthy. Plus, you cultivate relationships that can last a lifetime.

Ready to make your comments work for you? Start engaging more authentically today.

Good morning Lew. Being a retired guy SEO is not important to me but Thanks for the information. Those still active should pay close attention. Enjoy your day.

Good morning, Lew. Excellent advice. I see a lot of what I call "drive by" comments here in the Rain, clear that someone has not read the post and usually one for the points.

Hello Lew - genuine commenting can help build connections beyond any other point.  Isn't that an important part of being an ActiveRain member.  Of course, AR is a big place - I don't dare guess what motivates others.

Lew Corcoran good advice and information many on this site may not be aware of.  Hopefully those who make the robo comments to just pick up a quick 25 points, will think about it in the future.

Hi George Souto, I really appreciate your honest feedback. You're spot on in that many folks might not realize the value behind thoughtful, genuine comments. Hopefully, more will see beyond the quick points and recognize the importance of meaningful engagement. Hello Lew,  Good points in your blogs and I am with Nina, I do see "Some Drive bys" here in the rain, but then again I get upset of people that never comment on my blogs.

Hi Will Hamm, I appreciate your honesty and the relatable sentiments. It's true, sometimes it feels like we're putting effort into our blogs while others just pass by without saying a word. Still, I guess it’s a reminder that genuine engagement can sometimes be a bit of a one-way street, but it’s worth staying authentic regardless. Thanks for sharing your perspective. It’s nice to know we’re all navigating these little quirks together.

Lew, I think years ago, the comments AND the blog would index and the public could find them, not sure about now.

Hi Joan Cox, you bring up a really interesting point. Things have definitely evolved over the years, and I sometimes wonder how much the way comments and blogs are indexed has changed the landscape. It’s a reminder that staying adaptable and mindful of these shifts is key to making the most of our efforts. Thanks for sharing that perspective; it adds a thoughtful layer to the conversation.

I love this Lew!  For years, many have commented on the drive-by comments that some make. Your advice to read the post is the first tip towards writing a meaningful comment. Years ago, some would leave comments on my post encouraging me to go out and sell a home. I'm not an agent!  And, often I can tell if someone is just skimming a post by their comment. They miss the whole point of the post.

Hi Kathy Streib, thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt comment. I really appreciate you sharing your experience and insights. It's a great reminder of how taking a moment to truly engage with a post can make all the difference in meaningful conversation. Your perspective adds so much value, and I’m glad the tips resonate with you!

Your words are true, and I have even seen comments made end up in a written article from an outsider, haha.  I wonder if it has a negative effect on those who cut and paste the same comment on multiple posts?  That has certainly led to me having no respect for those who do, and I would never send a referral to them, haha.

Jun 17, 2025 06:00 AM

Hi Brian England, I really enjoyed reading your comment. It's funny how some comments can unexpectedly become part of someone else's article! I totally get what you mean about the copy-paste approach; it can definitely diminish the authenticity of interactions and, honestly, affect trust. Thanks for sharing your honest perspective. It's a good reminder to keep our comments genuine and thoughtful.

Lew Corcoran - understanding how digital footprints works is valuable to learn. I found what you wrote to be very educational. It would be great for you to create a CE Class and submit it for approval. This is a topic of discussion that could prove very educational and may keep agents out of trouble!

I often google my name to see what pops up. I found my name is frequently left in AR comments. What you say is true! I never put the concept you just explained into meaningful concept as well as you explained. But I do know, I do my best to read and write longer than usual comments about topics that resonate with me. Some people may find it annoying, but it is who I am - a Commentator!!!

This is a really good blog post that should be taken seriously by all ActiveRain Members and others using Social Media.

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful feedback, Patricia Feager. I truly appreciate your insights and enthusiasm. Your dedication as a commenter adds genuine value to the conversation.

Lew Corcoran - You have a clever way of writing about articles of interest and importance. There are pros and cons to leaving digital footprints. I think you would be great at writing, implementing, and instructing real estate agents how vital it is to speak well of your profession because digital prints can stay with us forever.

Lew Corcoran This advice was long overdue here in The Rain. First of all, unfortunately, many drive-by commenters who copy and paste responses will likely never read this. For those of us frustrated by that type of comment—like the ones that say, "Thanks for sharing great info, have a fantastic weekend"—we all know that guy... At least this gives us some constructive tools to improve our posts and allows us to engage more effectively with our fellow Rainmakers. I'll use this advice for my future posts and comments.

Oh, those dry-by commentators… like a sip of lukewarm tea—mostly harmless, but somehow missing the kick!

Hi Thomas J. Nelson, REALTOR ® CRS,ABR,PSA,RCS-D, CFSP, I really appreciate your thoughtful comment and your honesty about the challenges with drive-by comments. It's great to hear that the advice resonated with you and that you'll be applying it to foster more meaningful engagement. Sometimes, a small shift can make all the difference. Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective. I’m glad the post could offer some useful tools for your journey as a Rainmaker.
