Friday Fun…It’s Summer!

Yes, even though we’ve had summer temperatures (and humidity) since May, summer is officially here!

When I think of summer, I think of swimming pools, ice cream cones, playing outside until our parents told us to come in, and the beach.

When I was a kid, summer, ie, no school, was a full 3 months…from June through August. Now it’s mid-June, and some schools have just completed their school year, and schools (at least in our area) will begin again in August.

Summer for me was having nothing I had to do, but so many things I did do.

There was always Vacation Bible School and some time spent at the Y.  We went to the beach or the bay on weekends. I don’t remember ever being bored…and this was before devices and video games!

So for some Friday Fun…what’s a fun summer memory you have? What comes to your mind when someone says “Summer”?

Good morning Kathy,

Many fond memories of summer, growing up! Playing outside, climbing trees, building forts, paying in the creek building dams, playing baseball, kickball out until it was dark, capturing fireflies in a mason jar, swimming at lakes, picking things for our massive garden, helping mom can (not my favorite) but we kept busy, had fun all without any devices of any kind! Barely watched TV!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I thought of you when I wrote this because of posts you've written about your childhood. My grandmother put up jars of pickles but I watched and that was it.

Yes, summers are different. We didn't have the toys, so it was at the parks, playing baseball or just breathing healthy air. And we enjoyed every minute.

You're right Ed Silva, 203-206-0754  we stayed outside as long as we could. And if we had to stay in, we played games.

Good morning, Kathy - summer memories consists of my parents taking us to Six Flags of Texas, going swimming in two different neighborhood pools, having freedom to play outside, and buying snow-cones or ice cream from a truck that came by every day.

Joe Mojica I loved hearing the ice cream truck coming down the streets in the neighborhood. To this day, if I hear it, I still run outside.

Good morning Kathy. When I was young you got up in the morning, ate breakfast and were out the door to fresh air and sunshine. Unless it was your mom's turn to prepare lunch for your bunch, you stayed out until dinner. These days video games television and air-conditioning have the edge. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin aren"t we lucky to have had the childhoods we did!!   We played outside and were only inside when the weather wouldn"t let us.

You had me at ice cream, haha.  Since I learned that ice cream contains the good fats, I have been hooked, haha.  Not that I wasn't hooked before, but I felt guilty for indulging, but I no longer do, haha.

Hello and Happy Summer Solstice, Kathy - although I recall I may have been bored at times and saying, "there's nothing to do" why are countless memories that still exist today.  An especially vivid one comes to mind - July 20, 1969One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

Michael Jacobs ah yes! I remember that day. I also remember Hurricane Carla. I was about 10 . We didn't lose power but it the rain came down in buckets...it was windy and the only thing on the television were weather reports.

Hi Kathy.
Happy Summer! I loved summer up until I was 12 years old. We were outside all day long, riding bikes, playing tetherball in our yard, or at the school yard. We also had an open lot beside our house, so we often played baseball. When the weather was good enough, we rode our bikes to the swimming pool. Oh, and we always looked forward to the sound of the ice cream truck in the neighborhood. I'd scurry for a nickel.  After our dad died and we went to live with my aunt and uncle, we had summer jobs picking berries. That wasn't so much fun, but we did earn some spending money.

Carol Williams I'm glad you had the years you did when you were younger.  As I got older, I remember Saturday morning chores. They weren't bad and I'm glad my mother taught me to do them.

Kathy Streib - I really like your animated AI photos. They are so cool.

Yes, I have fond memories of summer vacations from years gone by. I think my favorite one was getting my first kiss in Thatcher Woods when I was 16 from a boy who always gave me butterflies. When I finally gave up on him, he surprised me with a kiss under a big and beautiful tree.

We've been having summer weather already and thankfully it's cooling down this week.  As a kid we played for hours outside in the woods, had fun at our lake home and at my Grandparents.  We also did a lot of traveling with my parents over the summer months - that was always a blast!!  Happy Summer Kathy!!

Hi Kathy:

It's hard to believe the first day of summer has come and gone already.

I remember playing outside all day, riding bikes all over the place for hours, and having home-made ice cream my Dad used to make. Several years in a row I went to a YMCA camp for a week.
