Singer Johnny Cash once sang, “I’ve been everywhere, man. I’ve been everywhere.”
I’m not as lucky as Johnny, as I haven’t been everywhere. Everywhere is probably too big a goal for one lifetime. But I have a goal to go to as many places as I can before the day comes that travel is no longer a possibility.
Domestically, I have traveled to forty-five of the fifty states (yes there are still only fifty) having spent at least one full day in each, some states, Illinois, Florida, and Wisconsin have been fortunate enough to have me as a guest for longer stints.
Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Louisiana, and West Virginia, watch out! You are on my radar.
A few years ago, my wife and I made a goal to visit each continent at least once.
So far, we have been to South America visiting both Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for some great sightseeing.
Europe is always fun, and we have been lucky enough to make several trips which included the countries of Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Hungary, Scotland, and The Netherlands. More to come for European travel.
In 2016, we were fortunate to journey to China on a twenty-three-day tour, which included visits to Hong Kong, Beijing, Xian, Wuhan, Lasha, Tibet, and several smaller inland cities. The trip concluded with a river cruise down the Yangtze River, ending with Shanghai before returning home both exhausted and enlightened.
Earlier this year, with clicked off another continent with a trip to Australia’s north coast. The trip included visits to Sydney to check out the Opera House, Townsville to pet a kangaroo, Cairns to ride an aerial tram and Darwin to visit the Museum of the Northern Territory. We also had the pleasure of a stopover in Indonesia to visit the Komodo Dragons.
As of this writing, we are chipping away at our goal with only Africa and Antarctica still to be addressed. Both are in the planning stage as an African safari looms large in our future and if Antarctica hasn’t melted away by the time we get there, we will slip on our overcoats and mukluks and have our picture taken with the penguins.
But travel can get expensive, so if you are lucky enough to get someone else to pay for it, it is all the better. After my big spending spree at the tennis club, I still had some AR points in my account so I thought I would apply them to my travel goals. I’m not sure how many AR points it’s going to take to reach my goal but as long as the points store stays open I’ll give it a shot,
Wish us luck that both our health and finances hold out long enough to make it everywhere, like Johnny Cash.
