A Personal Point Post

Points…What’s the Point? If you’ve not read the posts for this month’s challenge, you’re missing out on some creative and informative posts. And, if you’d like, there’s still time to participate.

My best friend was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s almost two years ago. I was sad when I heard the news, but not surprised. I’d noticed some signs but didn’t want to think it could happen to her.

When we met our neighbor, he told us of his Alzheimer’s. That was almost 6 years ago. He was doing well last summer. When he returned from his summer home in CO, we noticed his sudden decline. Early this year, his family placed him in a Memory Care facility.

FACTS

Over 7,000,000 Americans are living with Alzheimer's

About 1 in 9 people 65 and older has Alzheimer’s

In 2024, unpaid caregivers provided an estimated more than 19 billion hours of care valued at more than $413 billion

I would donate half of my points to the Alzheimer’s Association and the other half to these Top Five CRO’s for Alzheimer’s research

Over the years, research in Alzheimer’s has broadened its scope. From the early thoughts that plaque was the cause, researchers are looking at different possibilities, such as insulin resistance and reducing inflammation.

You know how people say everyone has someone in their lives who has or has had cancer. My concern is that soon the same will be said about Alzheimer’s.

My sister-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 52 years old. Initially, she managed well for about six months, but then she began wandering the neighborhood, prompting constant vigilance from Herby. His health started to decline under the strain. Eventually, he made the difficult decision to move her into memory care. Despite her condition, we made regular trips to visit her, ensuring she still felt connected to the family. Sadly, she passed away last summer at 72. Twenty years with the disease is a burden I hope not to face. Throughout it all, Herby remained devoted, visiting her weekly. He once remarked that Alzheimer's made her forget things, like her long-standing dislike of fish—even though she ate it every Friday at the facility.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518    52 seems so young. That is sad. My friend's husband is wonderful but I worry about how he's doing.

Good morning Kathy. A well planned use of your points. My personal experience has been limited to my father-in-law and it did have a profound effect on me. Thanks for your participation. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin our neighbor had to go into a memory care facility earlier this year, then my friend, and my sister-in-law's parents. We need to do more and better research in the area.

I don't think that all of these chronic diseases came about until processed foods came about, and I think that if we stopped consuming processed foods, these chronic diseases will go away.  If people let "real" food be thy medicine, they would be healthy and free of disease.

Brian England that is certainly an issue. I also think exercise and learning new things, not smoking, etc make a difference.

Hi Kathy,
I am sorry to hear about your best friend.  The only good news is that it isn't a physically painful disease. It certainly does take an emotional toll, though. It's unfortunate, with all the medical advancements that have been made, there are still so many unsolved mysteries... especially where the brain is involved.

Real or imaginary, this is a great way to spend your points. Thanks for the post, Kathy.

Hello Kathy - Planet Earth continues to point me in countless directions as I experience everyday life.  Along the way I have become more aware of very good as well as more than a few things that may be not be remembered as fondly.  It's quite the combination.  I imagine whatever the future holds, similar predictions seem likely.

Kathy, The human brain is incredibly complex, and it’s heartbreaking how many families are affected by neurological disorders. We can only hope that research continues to move forward!

A worthy cause, Kathy, for sure. We've lost a number of friends to Alzheimer's and other dementia-related illnesses. Very hard on the family to see loved ones go through this. And, of course, sorry to hear about your best friend. I lost one of mine some years ago to brain cancer which had much of the same impact on her memory and cognitive abilities as Alzheimer's does.

Kathy, as I and most of my friends are aging (gracefully), we still hear of those with dementia or Alzheimer's.

Kathy I would gladly donate all my points to solving this issue.  My father suffered for many years with it - about 17 and it was tough watching him go down hill.  And now one of our neighbor ladies is in the very early stages - and she is the sweetest lady ever. She stops by to say hi quite often but it did concern me when she did that at 8 at night and it was dark out.  We talked with her husband and hopefully he'll keep that in check.  I can't imagine what could happen if she forgot where she was or worse.

Thank you for this important entry to the June Challenge ❤️

The worst thing to lose (after eyesight) would be one's memory (I think). Imagine not remembering your mom any longer.

Kathy this is a very worthy expenditure of AR points. one of my wife's friends, who was a bridesmaid at our wedding just passed away with Alzheimer's, that really struck home with us.

The aging is a process that each experiences differently with almost all of them worsened by the lack of mobility of the elderly. Losing the mental acuity that kept them vibrant for so many years deteriorates the body quicker, A good use of the points.

As you know my dad died of Alzheimer's last year...it is the most painful thing to watch as it progresses. Heartbreaking. Hopefully they find a cure.
