Ask An Ambassador: Keep, Donate, Trash

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.WarrenCountyOhioRealEstate.com SAL.2002007747

As we're getting closer to having our home finished (still a few months to go...as we have been saying all year!), we're preparing for the move.  And one of those big tasks is going through 30+ years of accumulations and deciding what comes with us and what doesn't.

We've not exactly been minimalists, and despite rumors to the contrary, engineers can be sentimental too.  The last week or so has been a walk down memory road as I've found items and photos from elementary school, high school, my Navy days and my early days after the Navy.  And for the most part in the Keep/Trash/Donate decisions being made, I'm keeping the reminders of what made me who I am today.

We're a few Goodwill runs completed with more to go, and we'll be keeping the garbage cans full for a bit.

That same stroll down memory lane is also walking us through our 20+ years of real estate.  Old laptops, wifi network cards and fobs, client files, marketing materials, branded clothing and more have been categorized.

The net result is there is a lot less in the basement and a lot less in our shed, and what is left is better organized and ready to be packed.

One of the takeaways is recognizing that periodically we need to assess our business and our practices.

What activities should we keep?
What activities should we trash?
Which activities should we donate (delegate) to someone else?

Every time we have someone sign up on our IDX site for an account, we're reminded to keep producing evergreen content and letting it do its thing.

One of the things we trashed this week were all our old awards for real estate.  The clients we're seeking to attract aren't concerned about our volume in 2013, but what we can do for them today.

We have delegated tasks like listing photography, and frankly I'm much more willing to refer a potential client if there doesn't seem to be an ideal fit.  Net result, less time spinning my wheels and less stress in my life.

Have you done the Keep/Donate/Trash review lately?

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Goodwill was our friend; every trip to town was a stop there to unload.  I purged my kitchen for over 2 months before our move, and now I am purging again.  I have pans that I have used once, so they are going to someone else, four sets of glasses is a bit much so we are sending two sets to the womens shelter, old towels and sheets to the animal shelter and food that is within 4 months of expiring to the food bank at the church.  I hope someone else can use my junk. I almost forgot, we still have 24 boxes in the basement-5 years later-that have not been touched.

There are certain things we expect to change after the move that might actually have us needing more of certain things.  We have no family in Ohio, and when we move we'll be close to Liz's family, so the opportunity to put a few extra place settings down at meal time is something we're looking forward to.

Good morning Bill. Been there and done that over the years. We made many trips to the trash bins and Goodwill store. Now, while not proud, we are accumulating again. Enjoy your day.

Wayne, it's easy to add stuff, much harder to get rid of it!

Oh yes, I just did some trashing last week - got rid of files I no longer need, a plaque that was just taking up space, etc. It's important to do that from time to time!!

And while cleaning up I found a $50 gift card I never used! It's like having an extra birthday!

Have a great day!

Haha, I probably have one of those somewhere as well.

I found some gift cards so old I couldn't even check them to find out if they are still valid!  Oh...I also found my Blockbuster card :)

Love this post. Isn't it amazing if you go back say 20 years and look at how we did business. 2005 seems like the dark ages today...crazy.

I'm trying to think of the last time I saw a flyer box on a sign, yet that was an important part of what we did before smart phones and the Internet made that information and more available with a couple of taps on the phone.

Bill, moving has a way of making us go down paths we left behind. We discover surprising stories, stirred up memories, and the encouragement to let somethings go. There is also a twist - hope, excitement for what may come next, and dreams about our new tomorrows. Autumn is all about change. If you have time to read up on the season of Fall, it references abundance, wealth, and preservation. Change is everywhere. Optimism will give you the strength to keep moving forward. As you get closer to transitioning, don't forget to celebrate the life you are leaving behind and plan for the triumphant way you wish to live the next chapters in your life. I wish both, all the best.

Patricia Feager , I'm going both forward and backward :)   My old job wants me back in a part time capacity for the next 6 months (and that could go longer).   I'll be a Kelly temp, fully remote, 20 hours a week until they say differently.   It's a good balance of working again, but not working TOO much, and won't interfere with everything else we have going on for our move.   And for that matter, I can drag my laptop out on the back deck and work with the view right behind my screen once we get to the new place :)

Bill, - if your old job wants you back part time, they think very highly of you. Good friends and old employers can also have a hard time letting you go. Keep building new relationships and keep the old ones who you trust forever.

Hmm, I thought for sure you might have a trophy room in your new home, but I guess I was wrong since you are throwing away all of your old rewards, haha.

Brian, our real estate awards, my Navy plaques, sword, etc. have all resided on some storage carts in the basement for decades.  Just not our thing to put that out there.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - moving can be therapeutic but I also understand how it can be a pain too.  Once again, there is that balance issue hitting you in the face - don't fall down any of the many traps that the process can take you.  Stay focused. . .

Logistically it's going to be a hassle with all our stuff and furries.  Some stuff we'll have pro movers take, other things I'll Uhaul there so we know we have the essentials ready to go Day 1 when we get there.   The pets will need food, dishes, meds, places to sleep, litter boxes, etc, with no delays.

 "Trashing old real estate awards".

I've done that, too.  As you say, most clients don't care about your production from many years ago.

I did keep enough to maintain the Ego Wall in my office.  I still hang my first "Million Dollar Producer" award (in 1985 when the median home price in Tallahassee was $75K that meant something!)  The completion of the Broker Course certificate.  And a few others.

Best to you with your move!

Fred, I have a few things from my Navy days I might put on the wall at our next place (maybe).  I can understand why you keep the two you mention, both significant achievements!
We're getting closer to the move, looking forward to making the change (but not looking forward to the actual moving part!).

Bill you guys did a great job of cleaning up and getting ready to move!  We all have too much stuff.  And I'm one of those that does go through things very regularly (as in often) and we either donate or throw away what we're not using anymore. And you know  what, we still say we've got too much stuff!   And we do!!

Jun 24, 2025 10:37 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Even after this, I know I'm holding on to things I should probably let go.  There are no sons and daughters for us to give to, and the dogs? They don't want that stuff either :)

Bill I had to laugh because after I responded to your posts Gary pops his head in from the garage and says he's got a load to bring to our local charity!  And he was right - there was nothing in the pile  that we needed.  Give it to someone who will appreciate it I say!   And BTW get rid of more stuff before you move......don't pay for shipping stuff you'll never want, need or use!!

Saturday I was the only one in my office.  I texted a friend when I was too busy to take the call that I had a busy day and got two new clients but gave one away.  Today when we finally chatted and she asked about the "why" of the give away, I explained I could make a better use of my time than showing lots 45 minutes to an hour away.  So I sent them to a good agent and because it's just a lot and not a house I didn't ask or expect a referral fee.

For sure, far better to hand those off.  I've done similar, and same on low price referrals, here you go, good luck, hope it works out for you!

Good evening Bill,

OMG I love your post because the term you use is so appropriate "Keep/Donate/Trash review." I have been doing that for the last 6 years and my attic is empty and I never plan on going up in it again! Same with all my kids stuff...they now have it and can decide to keep those old swim medals and baseball trophies or toss them!

Dorie, some years back my mom gave me all my kid stuff (Cub Scout uniforms, old toys, comic books, etc.).   Some I kept, some I tossed.

Bill I am not looking forward to the day we will eventually move for this same reason.  We have lived in this house 44 years, and my wife still has things we were given at our wedding and never used.  ☺️

George Souto , we had our 40th anniversary this month.  All our china is either still in the original packaging or still wrapped in moving paper from when the Navy moved us. I doubt we ever use it, unless Liz breaks it out for a holiday meal after we move!

I cleaned out a shelf in my linen closet - definitely a lot to trash - I should go back and sort through the things I think I am keeping to trash some of that stuff too!

Jun 24, 2025 06:11 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

I realize I'm paying to move stuff I should just trash.  Some things (such as a soccer ball signed with personal notes from my last ship's soccer team) were hard to let go of.  I took pictures of each of the signed ball panels, so at least I have those saved.

Hi Bill,
I'm glad to hear you continue to make progress. Since I'm retired, I don't have to make those business decisions, although I probably have some old files I could get rid of. I don't have any plans to move, but I constantly say I need to purge. I just never seem to get around it. 🤪

File cabinets are one of the remaining things I need to empty.   A mix of clients and potential clients (those one and done showings that you struggle to remember!).

Its funny how I have helped so many people with this process and now find myself starting the keep- donate- trash project! Lots of memories and not always easy to motivate myself but I am working on it! Your post is a good reminder to get quit procrastinating and get going!  You are right about the awards, they dont mean much anymore!

Hi Bill:

I suspect you and Liz are making great progress in preparing for your move. It's quite an emotional journey isn't it?!

We need to do a bit more of the keep/donate/trash routine even there are no plans to move in the near future...it's just about making more space and thinking of what's to come. We've found the DAV (Veteran's Thrift Store) in neighboring Oceanside to be a great place for donations. I use NextDoor as well on occasion to donate but that's item by item so a bit cumbersome.

We are making progress.  The bulk of the basement has gone through the process, I've got a bit more to do in our shed, I can thin out some of my clothes in the closet and dresser, and the home office closets need screened.  We have a few bigger items (a dining room table) that we'll need a charity to come pick up.  Not too much longer and we'll have completed everything on our checklist.
