Same Named Cities Across the Country

Hi Joan... from what I remember there are 11 cities named Charlotte in the USA. We, of course, are the largest. When I lived in Paris and had to give my address to someone here in the USA they were always asking me if that was Paris, Texas.

There are 18 Montgomery Counties in the United States. Most of them are named after Major General Richard Montgomery, a Continental Army officer who died in the Battle of Quebec in 1775. One exception is Montgomery County, Alabama, which was named after another general, Lemuel P. Montgomery, though the city of Montgomery, Alabama is named after Richard Montgomery. 

Good morning Joan. When we moved to Oswego, Illinois, formerly a small farm town beyond the traditional Chicago suburban belt, we thought it original in name. Wrong! If you google information on Oswego you will most likely get information Oswego, New York. Enjoy your day.

I live in Walhalla, SC, a town with a significant German heritage. The name corresponds to Valhalla, the English version. Both words mean the same, but have different origins.

Joan - I enjoy these kind of facts.  I found that there are 9 Miami's in the U.S. There are also two Miami's in other countries.

I'm from Austin, Texas.  There are 7 other places in the U.S. by the same name- including Colorado.

Interesting. I live in a town named Georgetown. There are at least 29 States with a Georgetown. Wierd.

Joan, your blog about "Same Named Cities Across the Country" is a fun read, especially after driving over 4,000 miles! It's easy to get confused with so many shared names. Your examples are great: Charlotte (at least 9 in the US), Eustis (3 in the US), Denver (around 10), and Aurora (up to 27). It really highlights the interesting, sometimes confusing, patterns in US place names!

I can't believe you drove 4,000 miles across the country! You are right there are same names of cities but all have their own claim to fame and flavor!

With a quick look at Google, there are 21 Cities/Towns named Prospect in the US and 44 worldwide.

As if to add some fuel, the most common city name worldwide is San Pedro 244 to be exact.

Hello Joan - Pasadena can be found in multiple states too. A not-as-bumpy road through the AR blogroll provides a twist (err, maybe it's a detour) on the theme of your post. 

 I see stories about different places and connect them to members who may not live in that exact location.  This week there was an Aurora in the news but not the one in Colorado.
