How Have I Changed in 27 Years of Selling Towson Real Estate?

By
Real Estate Agent with Cummings & Co. Realtors

This month's ActiveRain Challenge is about how we have changed since we started real estate.

More precisely: "How has your Professional or Personal Life Changed from when you started your career in the Real Estate Industry (or as a blogger on ActiveRain) to where you are now?"

As I started in Baltimore real estate almost 27 years ago when I was only 22 years old, quite a bit in both my professional and personal life has changed!

At 22, I had just finished college, just moved to Baltimore, and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Freshly engaged to my now-husband, we moved to Baltimore for him to attend law school and work with his father at his father's law firm.

I had gotten a job in an apartment community, where I was promoted multiple times pretty quickly. Though I enjoyed touring people around the apartments and community, I didn't love the daily commute or the job as I moved up. Getting into rent payments and having to attend rent court for non-payments was not something I enjoyed.

My fiance saw in me how much I enjoyed being around people and the actual act of showing homes and handling the lease paperwork, and recommended I consider getting into real estate. He was right! It was the right fit!

I have mentioned before that not only was I young, I looked even younger. I bought inexpensive suits in the Junior departments at Macy's and TJ Maxx, and did what I could to look older.

I assisted multiple agents with graphic designs (I had to laugh when I saw an agent who I created flyers for in the early 2000's still using my design for a flyer in 2022) and I learned so much shadowing seasoned professionals.

Ask me to be on a Board? Yes! Ask me to be on a committee? Yes! I was so involved with everything I could be.

NOW?

Well, my child was born in 2006. College begins in the Fall out of State.

I no longer wear suits (I actually don't think I own any that fit anymore,) and I don't say yes to every committee or board.

I've grown a lot professionally and emotionally. I often say yes only when it is something I *want* to take on.

I help to answer questions for newer agents because I remembered how much it helped me when I was the younger one without the experience.

Most of all, I am very confident in who I am and feel very strongly that I am there to help my clients make the best decisions they can for themselves.

I feel my knowledge and experience is strong, and my clients get the best I can give every day.

Change can be great.

Thank you to Patricia Feager and Lew Corcoran for July's AR Challenge!

Marney Kirk - What a wonderful life you have, and you continued to grow stronger with growth and opportunities. From the ground up you met the challenges, and you changed quickly. This is an excellent submission for the ActiveRain July 2025 Challenge on how you changed while meeting many challenges. To me you proved what C.S. Lewis believed: "You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream." And you still have a lot more room for growth that will surely lead to prosperity! This was a great read!

Thank you so much!

Hello Marney - there is a lot of power in the ability to say "NO".   That "Next Opportunity" refocus can show us a lot.  Learning lessons from experience is ongoing.  Thank you for sharing the benefits of change.

Hello, Marney Kirk it is a beautiful thing that we have earned over the years to be in a position to say "no" more as we build our business.

We must work hard to "prove" ourselves in the beginning of our career. Toward the end, we can enjoy the fruits of our labor and work with clients we CHOOSE to work with. Our reputation usually precedes us. And that is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. Congrats to you on a great career in the industry.
