How America Will Celebrate Her Birthday On Independence Day

How much do you really know about how Americans plan to celebrate Independence Day this year? From fireworks and barbecues to road trips and patriotic spending, July 4th is more than just a holiday—it's a full-blown national tradition.

Thanks to an insightful report and eye-catching infographic from WalletHub, we have a detailed snapshot of the 2025 Fourth of July celebration. Packed with 50+ fascinating facts and statistics, the report dives into everything from how much money Americans are expected to spend, to how many hot dogs will be consumed, and even the most popular destinations for travelers this year.

Whether you're curious about how many people will watch fireworks shows, how much beer will be sold, or how many millions of U.S. flags will be imported, this data-rich breakdown gives a compelling look into the traditions, trends, and economics behind America’s birthday celebration.

Stay tuned—this year’s Fourth is set to be both festive and fascinating. By the way, did you know that:

  • There are some 16,000 fireworks displays around the nation at a cost of $2.8 billion?
  • 41% of Americans will attend a fireworks show?
  • 61% of Americans will attend July 4th picnic?
  • July 4th is America's top beer drinking holiday?
  • $4+ billion will be spent on alcohol, most of it on beer?
  • 150 million hot dogs will be consumed on July 4th?
  • Some $8.9 billion will be spent on food for the July 4th holiday?
  • 29% of Americans will purchase patriotic themed merchandise for the July 4th holiday?
  • Some 72.2 million Americans will travel 50+ miles from home to celebrate the July 4th holiday, setting a new record
  • 85% of Americans who travel for the July 4th holiday will do so by car?
  • 64% of Americans own an American flag?
  • 52% of Americans say that inflation is affecting their July 4th plans? (That's 8% less than in 2024.)
  • Over 3 million people watch the fireworks from New York City's Hudson River? (I used to be one of them.)
  • Massachusetts is the only state that bans all consumer fireworks?

Check out the WalletHub infographic below for more historical facts about July 4th, as well as current facts and figures for 2025. I'll bet you find some of these truly eye-opening!

Good morning Nina. Once upon a time I was a participant in helping the 4th with beer consumption but not this year. We will be part of the hot dog consumption with my son cooking them on the grill. And finally, we will be watching the town of Oswego fireworks at around 9:00PM. Enjoy your day.

I love reading through these statistics - we aren't going to do most of what's on here. We're not attending a fireworks show (it's not dark enough until 11pm and I can't stay up), we're not going to a picnic, I'm not having beer although yes to wine, there won't be hotdogs at my house, we're not buying patriotic themed merchandise, we're not traveling, inflation isn't impacting our plans, BUT.... we are going to a 4th of July parade, and we are celebrating at home, and we do fly our flag every day.

Happy July 4th!

Kat Palmiotti hi Kat... we are not doing any of those things either. If there's anything I avoid like the plague, it's any kind of travel on a weekend like this! I'm sure you'll enjoy the parade and having a nice day at home. Happy July 4th!

Nina Hollander, Broker - ~2.8 billion dollars is a lot of money to go up in smoke! The price is staggering. The meaning behind the celebrations that take place are good reasons for gatherings. I'm not one to enjoy celebrating in big crowds of people. The stats are unbelievable. I wonder if there will be cuts in the budget.

For families with children, it is a great experience. Personally, I will not be part of the herd.

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... and most of those fireworks come from China... no wonder we have such a trade deficit! :)

Nina Hollander, Broker - in 1998 I went to visit my daughter who was living and teaching in Japan. I happened to be in Japan after our celebration of the 4th of July. One of the places my daughter took me to was to see a Fireworks Display that was of significantly more than what I saw in the USA. I asked my daughter, why are they celebrating the 4th of July when it's already over? That's when I learned their celebrations were for the amount of money their Country received from our country for making the fireworks and selling it to our Country. The more we buy, the bigger fireworks they have, and all that money came from our country!

She taught and lived there for 4 1/2 years.

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... what a great story. The most amazing fireworks display with music I ever saw was in Strasbourg, France on Bastille Day. It was unforgettable.

150 million hot dogs will be consumed...ewwww....and another stat...about half of those hot dogs will be consumed by Joey Chestnut at the Nathans hot dog contest in Coney Island.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I don't eat hot dogs, Jeff... so I certainly don't contribute to that number. It looks like Joey Chestnut is back at Coney Island this year.

Nina Hollander, Broker Looks like you have the Celebrations covered - I have to run out shopping. We are celebrating at the Delaire Landing Potluck Dinner, and everyone is bringing a dish. Later, Fireworks can be seen from the river. I am making ravioli lasagna

Hello Nina, The older I get not into fireworks any more, same as to drinking beer, I have to be mowing lawn and it must be hot for me to drink beer.  Now I know I will be during either hamburgers  or hot dogs on the grill.  Steaks are to expensive now.

Will Hamm hi Will... I never drink beer so I certainly don't contribute to those statistics. At the end of the day, what's more quintessentially American than hamburgers and hot dogs?

Thank you for sharing this fascinating look at how Americans will celebrate their Independence Day, Nina Hollander, Broker. I really appreciate the detailed insights and fun facts. It's a great reminder of how vibrant and lively our national traditions are. By the way, as fas as I can tell, Massachusetts is the only state that bans all consumer fireworks. I guess they’re just not feeling the red, white, and boom! 😄

Jul 02, 2025 12:33 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Lew Corcoran hi Lew... in the Carolinas those fireworks are a big deal. Not legal to sell them in North Carolina, so people close to the South Carolina border drive over to buy fireworks.

Jul 02, 2025 12:47 PM
Lew Corcoran

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker. We see the same thing up here in Massachusetts. Folks head to New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont to get their fireworks since they're more accessible there. It’s pretty interesting how people find ways around the regulations!

Jul 02, 2025 01:04 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Lew Corcoran that's like me going three minutes over the border in South Carolina to buy gas, where it's cheaper because taxes are cheaper!
