Changes in my Real Estate Career

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with California Coastal Estates DRE 01329427

Having started real estate 24 years ago, I was ambitious and eager to pile the listings and buyers in my pipeline. A goal each 6 months was to open a new office. I succeeded by opening 5 offices, in Aliso Viejo, San Diego, Newport Beach and Palm Springs, and San Diego. No office was too small and our boutique firm had motivated agents that were bi-lingual or polygots. We all inspired one another to build our teams because we were driven to take care of clients, give back for a cause after each transaction, and managers were rewarded with bonuses. Not to mention we built a family atmosphere.

Life changed! The loss of my son, directed me into a place that succeeding in business was no longer a goal. I just wanted to be in my home, working local, where my son loved to be when he wasn't training for the Olympics or surfing at a local beach.

We change, our view and goals in life changes. We put things in perspective. It makes it that much harder when he always assisted me when he was home and at his home for marketing or errands to the local board of association.

Now, that a few years have passed, I feel as if I want to work more just to keep my mind busy. I am good at what I do and being a Broker gives me flexibility to still work at my own pace and provide exceptional service to each customer.

a death of loved one can certainly change all your priorities.  I haven't lost a child, but my sister lost two and I saw what it did to her each time a bit more of her heart died along with them.  Like you, I see her helping others and keeping herself busy now.

Don Baker - I am sorry for the losses of two of your sister's children. I don't know if anyone can actually mend a broken heart. Faith, hope, and love can lead to perseverance. It takes time.

Don.

It is what we have to do. I am sorry for her loss.

I left to Europe and life has been different, but now that my younger son finished school at Columbia, I am in CA more. I would only be home about 10 days to close on real estate, but now, I am here to stay busier and jaunt to Portugal and Brussels occasionally now.

Thank you kindly Lew.

I think God uses us for examples to show that side of life. Just wish he did not choose me to be that child of his do that.

Miss my boy so much.

CA COASTAL ESTATES Lauren Selinsky Perez CRS - Healing takes time and priorities shift when dealing with the loss of a child or any close family member. It takes a great deal of courage to put aside business priorities and to deal with personal loss. A child plays an integral part of their mother's life. When my spouse died at an early age, it took me five years to learn how to breathe again. Gone but never forgotten, right?

Everyone goes through the process at their own pace. I'm glad to see you are back. I thought of you often during the years. Mixed emotions are as turbulent as storms in the sea of life. Peace is a vessel that will calm your restless soul. True courage stems from strength and lots of courage in all life's challenges.

Thank you for speaking to us through your heart via AR for this challenge on Change. Learning how to have the courage to withstand any storms life may bring an anchor of hope to others. Courage is the bridge that takes us to higher ground. Peace be with  you.

Hi CA COASTAL ESTATES Lauren Selinsky Perez CRS - your analogy of "taking two steps back and start again," reminds me of the fluctuations of the heart with that constant yo-yo effect. Moods and emotions change - they are forever changing. Getting into the rhythm of life is not easy. Nothing is constant but hope and courage can prevail. Triggers of loss are like pop ups that interrupt our thoughts. And then, just like that something comes floating by into our mind, landing on our hearts and somehow, we know, moving forward is the right thing to do. I do believe life is so much more than what we see and feel here on earth. We really were created to help one another. Many will be inspired by your courage. And the best part is, you don't even have to know who those people are.

Patricia,

Your words pulled me up just now. So, I thank you for that.

Life takes a toll on you and when you think you have the courage and strength, you end up taking two steps back and start again, but here I am.

I am sorry for your loss.

Truly,

L

Lauren, you are a member of a club that every parent rears. My wife and several of our friends unfortunately are members of that group.  A real estate career affords you a manner to make a comfortable living and to also take time when needed for family.

Ed,

So very true. Not too good being in this ugly club. My condolences to your wife.

I take one day at a time and fortunate that real estate has taken me to a point of staying busy to keep my mind busy as well. It is too much some days...

Thank you,

L
