"People first, then money, then things."
---Suze Orman
Whether you are retired, near retirement, or thinking about retirement, there is a lot to think about and consider.
- The economy
- Inflation
- Money
- Health
- Last Will & Testament
- Strength
- Living Accommodations
- Safety
- Potential Disability
- Transportation
Let's start with your basic health and flexibility. Have you thought about what you'll say to your doctor before your next appointment? It is a lot easier to be prepared about what you want to discuss before you're sitting in the doctor's office waiting for your turn. Perhaps you might want to make a daily list and write down questions and new concerns. Then have that list ready and go down your punch list with your doctor or nurse. Make good time with your doctor. Otherwise, you'll forget if you're caught off guard.
Safety. The house where you live may need minor or major changes and repairs. Our vision changes as we age. To prevent accidents and falls, plan to light the way in the dark using nightlights. Some are automatic and lights will come on in the dark when you begin to walk into another room. If not, take a look around the corners and turns you need to make. Getting up in the middle of the night or when it's dark, can feel strange or dangerous. What can you do now, before you trip and fall or bump into sharp corners?
Affordability. Can you still afford to live on what you get or have in savings? Do you have enough to get by now or into the future? What is affordable today, may not be later. Estimate your needs and figure out how you're going to live in a way that is affordable and comfortable for you. Applying for a part-time job may sound like a good idea, but can you walk, sit, stand, lift, and think as clearly today as you did in your younger years? Do you have enough cash, or do you lack cash? Do you have a plan if life changes? Has your taxes and insurance risen in excess of what you can afford?
Location. Do you live in a location where there is easy access to hospitals, police, fire department, family, friends, and a place where you can easily get your needs met? Is your location safe to walk if you can't drive?
Do you know where everything is when you need it?
- Documentation & Proof of ownership, military records, a Last Will & Testament, passwords, property records, medical information, etc.
- Expense records that are clear to understand in case someone has to jump into your shoes.
- Does someone you know, love, and trust have a key to your house?
- Do you need a medical alert?
- Are your financial records and assets in a safe and secure place?
Other useful information.
- Do you keep a daily journal?
- Have you paid your taxes and bills on time.
- Is your driver's license and registration current?
- Are you forgetting more than usual?
- Do you have contact information handy and easily accessible?
- Do you have a current Who, When, Where, and What list prepared?
MAY THE WORST NEVER HAPPEN TO YOU
