On July 18, 2025, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits up 0.2% to 1,397,000 units in June of 2025 from 1,394,000 units in May of 2025, but declined 4.4% from 1,461,000 in June of 2025. Single family building permits down 3.7% to a rate of 866,000 units in June of 2025, from 899,000 units in May of 2025, and there were 478,000 multifamily building permits issued in June of 2025.
Nationwide housing starts higher 4.6% to 1,321,000 units in June of 2025, from 1,263,000 units in May of 2025 but decreased 0.5% from 1,327,000 units in June of 2024. Single family starts lower 4.6% to a rate of 883,000 units in June of 2025 from 926,000 in May of 2025, and there were 414,000 multifamily building starts in June of 2025.
Nationwide housing completions dropped 14.7% to 1,314,000 units in June of 2025 from 1,540,000 units in May of 2025, and fell 24.1% from 1,731,000 units in June of 2024. Single family completions declined 12.5% to a rate of 908,000 units in June of 2025, from 1,038,000 units in May of 2025, and there were 383,000 multifamily completions in June of 2025.
