Oversized junk mail. Too much of it! Searcy AR history of mailboxes.

 Too much oversized worthless mail!

It will not easily fit in mailboxes.  Mail carriers must not like carrying the oversized mail.  Makes me think of the history of mailboxes.  My older house and most of our Searcy Arkansas older subdivisions still have little hanging mailboxes beside the front door and the "mailman" still walks through the neighborhood and delivers the mail.  Wonder how they like this big stuff?

That made me start thinking.  Betcha you have paid no attention to mail boxes.  Older subdivisions in Searcy like Cloverdale and Lambert Terrace all have the little front porch mailboxes.  Later there were lots of mailboxes on posts beside the driveways of the homes.  Much better!  And now we have those huge brick pillars  with the mailboxes built in! They cause more damage for sure and the damage happens more if they are on both sides of the street.  It is harder to back out without hitting a neighbor's mailbox and costs more to repair the car and the brick!  And the neighbor might hit yours!  Mine has been knocked into or downed several times.

So get out of the house for awhile, drive around and search mailboxes.  It is interesting and kinda fun!

I always pay attention to unusual mailboxes and try to take a picture of ones I like.

One of my favorites is a Manatee  mailbox on Marco Island, FL. I laugh everytime  I see it.

This one is on Collier Blvd. just after one exits the bridge.

Manatees are an endandered animal in FL. and one can see them frolicing in canals.

I like unusual ones also.  I have never seen a manatee in person or maibox!

I have a big mailbox but hardly ever get mail anymore! I do notice interesting mail boxes.

Most of the mail I get is big old advertising cards.

I have seen the Manatee mailbox dressed up in costumes at different times.

When street work was being done  he appears as a workman!

I tried to find the manatee in a witch's costume but couldn't find it.

Try to imagine a Manatee witch.

You have to know a manatee to make it a witch.  LOL

Barbara, I love this! Mailboxes really do tell the story of a neighborhood over time. From little hanging boxes to brick pillars, it’s fascinating how something so simple reflects changes in design, convenience, and even challenges with oversized mail. Makes a casual drive around the neighborhood feel like a mini history lesson!
