On August 19, 2025, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits lower 2.8% to 1,354,000 units in July of 2025 from 1,393,000 units in June of 2025, and decreased 5.7% from 1,436,000 in July of 2024. Single family building permits up 0.5% to a rate of 870,000 units in July of 2025, from 866,000 units in June of 2025, and there were 430,000 multifamily building permits issued in July of 2025.
Nationwide housing starts gained 5.2% to 1,428,000 units in July of 2025, from 1,358,000 units in June of 2025 and jumped 12.9% from 1,265,000 units in July of 2024. Single family starts increased 2.8% to a rate of 939,000 units in July of 2025 from 913,000 in June of 2025, and there were 470,000 multifamily building starts in July of 2025.
Nationwide housing completions higher 6.0% to 1,415,000 units in July of 2025 from 1,335,000 units in June of 2025, but dropped 13.5% from 1,635,000 units in July of 2024. Single family completions rose 11.6% to a rate of 1,022,000 units in July of 2025, from 916,000 units in June of 2025, and there were 385,000 multifamily completions in July of 2025.
