Celebrating Our Constitution and Citizenship Day

After 9/11, I began carrying a small copy of the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution in my travel bag. It was my way of keeping my country with me, no matter where I was.

declaration and constitution

Today is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Our country did not just happen. There was a purpose and reason behind each paragraph and Amendment.

Do you remember memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution when you were in school???

Can you still recite any of it??

Did you know the Preamble to the Constitution consists of just 52 words?! Remember that the next time you take part in a 53-word challenge.

Did You Know…

~Of the spelling errors in the Constitution, "Pensylvania" above the signers' names is probably the most glaring.

~The U.S. Constitution has 4,400 words. It is the oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world.

~Because of his poor health, Benjamin Franklin needed help to sign the Constitution. As he did so, tears streamed down his face.

~As evidence of its continued flexibility, the Constitution has only been changed seventeen times since 1791!

~Some big names were absent from the Constitutional Convention

If you want to celebrate the day, you can reacquaint yourself with the Preamble and Constitution.

Good morning, Kathy... what a great tribute to Constitution and Citizenship Day. As a naturalized citizen it's an important day for me. Loved all the "did you know" facts, because I knew only a couple of them.

Good morning Kathy. Wouldn't it be nice if schools spent more time on the Constitution since many, including our politicians have no clue! Some of our politicians have supposedly taught Constitutional Law in law schools. And I wonder why so many people are clueless. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin it's sad that outside sources have sought to dumb down our society through our educational system.   It appears to be working.

I found the video very interesting, he explained it very well, I do hope that our media remains independent so that we can discuss the issues and the constitution as he says and explore each others viewpoints openly and understand each other more so than we are today.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 well said and I agree. Previously, we counted on our media to tell us about the news of the day. Those days are gone. We have to be able to discuss our ideas and thoughts with others without screaming or yelling or callin each other names.

Hmm, I don't have it memorized, but it seems to me that the Constitution has been trampled upon over the years, haha.

Brian England I'm not sure they still teach a class on the Constitution in our schools anymore.

Hello Kathy - I, for one, I am happy that I have not been recently tested for my memory of the preamble to the Constitution or the document itself Your post does make me think of those who are in power of such things might do.  Yes, I digress. . .

Hi Kathy I used to carry the little book with me as well for years......and enjoyed reading it while waiting for an appointment, flight, whatever.  I didn't know some of the facts.....how interesting.  It is indeed one of the most amazing documents ever written.

I really appreciated this post Kathy Streib  It is so important to remember our history and the importance of our country. Sadly these days many people are negative about our country. I didnt know about Benjamin Franklin being in such poor health when he signed the constitution.  I also didnt know it had only been changed 17 times.

Thank you!
