New opportunities to serve on our boards, commissions and committees

The city of Aurora is looking for volunteers to serve on its advisory boards, commissions and committees, including two new groups — the Arts and Culture Commission and the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Board. Applications are now open for both.

The new volunteer panels come after the city, at the direction of council, reviewed existing boards, commissions and committees and found several that provided similar and often overlapping input on city services. The new commission and board will each have up to 15 members. While applications are now being accepted, the new board and commission will both need to be formally approved at the Oct. 6 council meeting. If approved, both will be active starting Jan. 1, 2026.

The new Arts and Culture Commission will advise on arts, culture and community engagement, including citywide programming and serving on arts selection panels. The following boards and commissions will dissolve to create this commission:

  • Art in Public Places Commission
  • Aurora Fox Arts Center Board
  • Cultural Affairs Commission

The new Parks, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Board will advise on outdoor and recreation offerings, including community engagement and events. The following boards and committees will dissolve to create this board:

  • Golf Course Advisory Committee
  • Open Space Board
  • Parks and Recreation Board

As part of the citywide review of boards, commissions and committees, council members also previously voted to eliminate the Independent Review Board and transition the Veteran’s Affairs Commission from monthly to quarterly meetings. The City Council’s full discussion on all of these items can be viewed on YouTube and AuroraTV.

The people who serve on Aurora’s boards and commissions are critical to the city’s success. With more than 20 groups dedicated to providing valuable insight to city officials, there is an opportunity for every interest.
