REFLECTIONS OF OCTOBER

Unleaded Gas prices finally came down in Flower Mound. $2.49 sounds good!

I attended an engaging and entertaining workshop on Tuesday, 9/30 exploring how familiar songs can be re-invented - transformed into something fresh and unexpected through creative shifts in groove, harmony, and mood! Rosana Eckert, MMus, is a Grammy recognized jazz vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and improviser. She released three critically acclaimed solo albums, Sailing Home, and she co-leads the Brazilian jazz-fusion sextet Brasuka, whose downbeat praised debut A Vida Com Paixao appeared on numerous "Best of 2021 lists. She performs and records extensively, having collaborated with many jazz and vocal luminaires, including on 3 Grammy recognized projects, including 2023 Grammy-nominated track "How Deep Is Your Love," which she co-produced.

This was an interactive workshop, and participants could suggest familiar songs while she transformed them into swing, jazz, or whatever mood set the mood for something different and entertaining. As she explained, in her head is an extensive library of songs. Not only did she play the Baby Grand Piano, but she also sang. In conclusion, I walked away with a deeper appreciation for the value of memory, perfecting your craft, and the art of creative interpretation!

 PERSONAL STORIES & MEMORIES

October 3rd - This is the anniversary of my first kiss. I was 16 years old.

October 16 & 17, 1976 - This is the anniversary of escaping from a RAMADA INN hotel fire in Dolton, IL. I was pregnant. My husband and I were invited to my friend's wedding. He decided to spend the night in a hotel instead of driving home late at night. For safety's sake, he took his gun. I did not like that, but it was his gun that saved our life. The fire started in the room across from ours. It was reported that kids were playing with hotel matches. When the smoke started billowing into our room, we escaped out the window using a ladder, thanks to the hotel janitor. My spouse shot and shattered the window to get us out of the building. I did go to the hospital. Four months later, I delivered a healthy baby boy.

October 31, 1988 - This is the date I negotiated the best new car sale. I was in the showroom with the last salesman on the floor. He couldn't leave until I finalized my sale. I gave him a hard bargain, telling him, he would have to reduce the sales price the next month, so why not give it to me now, the price I'm willing to pay. Plus, I knew he wanted to take his kids trick-or-treating. He agreed to the price I offered and that was a very fine price!!!

October - What Can Compare (My best October Poem)

Poet: Sterling Brannen

October is a pleasant time;
The foliage is so sublime,
And there's a briskness in the air
What with October can compare?

Though fainter are the solar glints,
Thought fainter, too, the floral tints,
Though month-end finds the trees quite bare,
What with October can compare?

In town and country, forest, field,
Is garnered kindly Nature's yield.
The harvest urges thankful prayer.
What with October can compare?

BEST OCTOBER SONG & LYRICS

Keep in mind the last time
You go away at night
Keep in mind the last time
But don't ignore the first
Raise your eyes just go again
There will be a next time
So you go go go if you wanna go
You stay stay stay well you never know
Day day day will rise again
You know know know it will come again
It will come again
Keep in the mind the last time
But don't ignore the worst
Raise your eyes just go again
There will be a next time
So you go go go if you wanna go
You stay stay stay well you never know
Day day day will rise again
You know know know it will come again
It will come again
In a perfect world
There would be no divide
In a perfect world
We could both open up
And see the other side
And see the other side
So you go where you wanna be
They say it will set you free
You know it's never so
You go, you're on your way
On your way
On your way
On your way

Good morning Patricia. Must say have not seen unleaded gas at that price here in the poorly run state of Illinois in what seems forever. Anybody with musical talent is a hero to me since I have none. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - This is the lowest gas came down in a long time. We were staying steady around $3.00 a gallon for a long time. Then in recent weeks it came kept coming down. I hope it stays where it is right now and comes down even lower. Hopefully, you will see lower prices too.

The right music is so relaxing. Being part of an interactive workshop was a first experience for me. This Fall Semester is amazing!

Hello and Happy October, Patricia -gas prices are incredibly high in California, your feature photo underscores that dramatic difference.  Although, I have little to no musical aptitude in anyway, I can appreciate how talent is explored in a variety of ways.   Like any month, this tenth one of 2025 is likely to be an adventure.

Michael Jacobs - To think, I was complaining about local gas prices until recently. I would not be able to drive my car to all the places I've been if prices were as high as you say.

I played piano but did not study Music Theory or improvise to get a different vibe with the chords. I wish I had gotten that far! To hear a familiar song played three or more ways was quite an experience!

Patricia Feager - there are advantages as well as disadvantages in places we live.  The same seems valid in the ways we respond to aspects of everyday life.  Creatively and beyond.

Michael Jacobs - True! Some people don't have the luxury to live anywhere they want. A company proposed a relocation plan to another state. That made it easy on me. Could I pick up and move somewhere else now? Probably not. People do adapt.

Good morning, Patricia... I can't imagine how you remember all those dates. I basically remember birthdays and my wedding anniversary. Our gas is not yet quite that low, but as I earn points when I shop at my grocery store, I can't remember the last time I paid over $2.00 for a gallon of gas.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I always remembered my first kiss! My friend's wedding was on Sweetest Day. In Chicago, they were our best friends. We always celebrated their wedding anniversary and talked about the fire often. I will never forget buying my car on Halloween night!

Hi Patricia,
It never occurred to me to remember the date of my first kiss. My brother has an amazing memory. Me, not so much... except when it comes to conversations. I may not be able to recall the exact date of a conversation, but I can repeat it back to you. That came in handy more than once in the real estate business.

Anyway, back to you: You are doing so many interesting things in retirement. I'm impressed at how you continue to learn and grow. ❤️

BTW: I am VERY jealous of your gas prices.

Carol Williams - a first kiss was a rite of passage! I still remember what the guy who I kissed looked like. Tall! Blonde Hair! Had that Beachboy look and sunglasses too! He was a guy from the neighborhood, one year older than me. We played together. Plus, when I practiced my piano lessons, he'd sit on my front porch to hear me play. Ah!!! I always had a crush on him. He reminded me of the boy who played Sandy on the original Flipper T.V. Show. I actually wrote a letter to Sandy (TV name) and he replied back sending me photographs of himself. I had the pictures taped to my bedroom wall for the longest time!

Carol, I'm not the home body. I always enjoyed getting out and exploring new opportunities. When people think of retirement, they seem to think of retirement home, playing bingo and playing cards - that is not something I ever want to do! There are too many places and things I want to see and do!

Sorry to make you jealous of my gas prices.

Carol Williams and Kat Palmiotti - High School was a Business School. And I played piano. Between the piano keys, typing keys, and using stenography, that's when I had to be good at memorizing and not looking down at the steno pad, piano keys, or typewriter keys.

Hi Patricia= I have one question...How in the world can you remember those dates??!!!   That is amazing.   My memory growing up in Houston is that every Halloween it rained. I remember my poor cousin dropping his Trick or Treat bag in the water filled gutter. (I ended up giving him most of my candy.)

Kathy Streib - Remembering dates was never an issue for me.

My memories of celebrating Halloween as a kid was it was always very, very cold in Chicago and nobody got to see my costumes wearing my heavy coat. Awe, I would feel bad for your cousin who dropped his Trick or Treat bag in the water too! You did the right thing. That's a good memory! I wonder if he remembered that day too?
