Visit Honey Run Waterfall in Knox County Ohio

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Stars Realty

Nestled in the rolling hills of Knox County, just a stone's throw from the quaint town ancient sandstone cliffs meet lush hemlock forests, and the gentle roar of falling water invites you to relax. Whether you're a seasoned hiker, a family seeking adventure, or a photographer chasing golden-hour light, Honey Run offers something magical.

What Makes It Special?  At first glance, Honey Run Waterfall might seem unassuming. But its charm lies in the details. The waterfall tumbles over layers of Blackhand sandstone, a geological relic formed over 350 million years ago during the Mississippian Period.  This ancient rock, etched with fossils and dramatic overhangs, creates a dramatic backdrop that's perfect for exploration. Surrounding the falls is a rare disjunct boreal habitat—think towering Eastern hemlocks, delicate witch-hazel, and wild ginger more commonly found in Canada's northern wilds than Ohio's heartland.  It's a biodiversity hotspot that feels like stepping into a small prehistoric gorge.

The park itself, managed by the Knox County Parks District, spans over 367 acres, including the original waterfall site and the expansive Honey Run Highlands added in 2010.  The trails wind through shaded hemlock groves, past unique rock formations, and down to the banks of the Kokosing River—a state-designated scenic waterway that's ideal for a quiet paddle or splash.

Getting to Honey Run is as easy as it is scenic and you can park at 10855 Hazel Dell Road, Howard, OH 43028.
