Getting The Word Out About Elections & Voting

If you have not checked-out the new "ActiveRain Zoom Challenge" you need to, because it is an easy way to pick-up some quick AR Points.  First if you attend the ActiveRain Weekly ZOOM Meeting from start to finish every Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. EST, from now until the end of the year, you will be awarded 500 points every week you attend.  Second if you do the assignment given at the end of the meeting for that week, you will be awarded another 500 point.   That is an easy 1,000 points!!!

The challenged started this past Tuesday, and the assignment for this week was to write a blog describing the type of podcast we would do if we have or started one.  I don't presently have a podcast, but if I was to do one it would be on a topic that I feel very strongly about, "Elections and Voting".

Voting is a right and great privilege we have that is often taken for granted.  Many have given their life serving our Country for us to have the right to vote to elect those who govern our cities, states, and country.  This is also a topic close to me, because I have been involved in running elections for over 40 years.  First as a Moderator at a polling district, then as the Head Moderator for my town, and now as the Republican Registrar of Voters for my town.

In the town I live in, Middletown, CT. we can expect a 30%-35% of our registered voters to vote in our Municipal Elections, about 50% in our State Elections, and about 75% in Federal Elections.  This is shameful in my opinion.  There is no reason why EVERY voter should not vote in EVERY election.

So my podcast would focus on:

  • Why it is important to vote.
  • Explaining the Election Process.
    • The different positions, and number of workers it takes to run an election.
    • What takes place before an election.
    • What takes place after an election.
  • Discuss ways to improve the election process.
  • Why every election has an important element to it.
  • Encourage residents to vote.
  • Encourage residents to get involved in elections
  • Provide an opportunity for Elected Officials to explain what they do.

Each podcast would be about an hour long, and I would take phone calls from those listening.

I had not thought about doing a podcast before this assignment, but now that I have written this blog it is something I should seriously consider doing.

Hello George - voting is important and perhaps more so in local elections in some ways, The outcome can impact the community and the surrounding area personally. I can see the topic interested you to pursue the possibility of podcasting - it's not in my wheelhouse.   Congratulations on completing the assignment.

Good morning George. Want to express your opinion, vote! Normally when someone wants to talk politics my first question is "did you vote?". No use to discuss a political issue with those that don't. Enjoy your day.

Good morning, George... how creative and unique! I think you came up with this idea because as a fellow immigrant you have deep feelings about the privilege of voting, as I do. My mother instilled those in me as a proud immigrant, herself.

I enjoyed attending the zoom meetings before points were being doled out for those who attend, but unfortunately, I now have something more important that I do during that time period on Tuesday's.

Good Monday morning, George. The mail in ballots and early voting options are very popular in our home community. The City of Gaithersburg make the process very inviting and easy to use.

I love this one, George. I remember the first time I voted. My mother was so proud. She and I walked up to the polling place (my old elementary) and was telling her friends she saw that it was my first time to vote.    I love the idea of your podcast about voting and elections. Thank you for your dedication to this.

Hi George Souto - your idea for a podcast to get voters to vote is an excellent idea! There was a time when I was a voter registrar. Having a podcast would have been a lot easier than going door-to-door or delaying buyers from leaving the closing while I asked them to register to vote. The concept of creating a podcast for this purpose is definitely more professional!
