Dead Branches Make Excellent Habitat

I peeked outside my window and noticed an unusual bird perched on my next-door neighbor's tree branch. What could it be?

The bird remained perched on the branch without leaves. By this time, I was standing in my front lawn looking up at the bird. And I thought to myself, how wonderful this bird chose a dead branch over branches with leaves!

The bird noticed me but did not leave. Was the bird as curious about me as I was in this feathered creature? And then, just like that, my mind traveled to that old saying, "one man's junk is another man's treasure. With that being true, a dead branch outdoors is another bird's perch, isn't that nature's treasure?

As the bird flew to a different branch the wingspan was greater than I thought. It's camouflaged now but I can still see my feathered friend in my neighbor's tree. Dead branches make great perches! In that moment I was as happy as I was sad for when there are new development and construction going on, how many of these habitats are gone forever?

What if there was a movement for preservation dead trees? Would it make a difference or are people so used to cutting away dead branches to not have to look at them. Since I moved to Flower Mound there is such a decline in greenspace. I find it concerning when eventually a whole tree succumbs for the benefit of something new. How about you? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Timber was cut on the property behind my house. For over 5 years, before the cut, I would hear a barn owl a night, just at dusk.  Now his habitat is gone, and so is he.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - Awe, that's so sad. You must miss the barn owl. May the good memory of the barn owl stay with you always. Now I know, we definitely need to start a movement for preservation dead trees.

Good morning Patricia. The path of progress is also the path of destruction. Seeing it happen here in Oswego, Illinois as corn and soy bean fields are transformed into single family homes and townhomes. Just twelve months ago all you saw were farm fields at certain intersections. Now there is development on two of the four corners. Enjoy the dead branch before someone cuts it down.

Wayne Martin - One of several locations I go for my UNT Classes is at Robson Ranch. I also enjoyed the beauty of the open farmland. Now, Developers began their HUGE H-E-B Grocery Store. The building is enormous! Much bigger than any other superstore I know! So much for the beauty of farmland that was toiled on for many generations. These H-E-B stores are popping up all over Texas! The first time I visited one was in San Antonio. I did not like it! I thought I'd never find the exit or my car when I left! You almost need Valet service.

Robson Ranch builds 55+ Communities. There is no way a retiree can walk that much just to buy a small quantity of groceries. That's where the developer's plan to have retirees' shop!

It's too bad Oswego's corn and soy bean fields are in the process of being transformed. I'm sure that you did not decide to buy a home where there was planning for paths of destruction.

There was a place near Flower Mound years ago where homeowners sued their real estate agents for not letting them know a giant walmarts and other stores were on the records for development including expanding road construction. Oh my gosh, that was the daily news! New homeowners were furious!

This is sad, sad news.

Patricia Feager I don't know about starting a movement for preserving dead trees, but they are many in the wild forests. I have a two acre parcel under contract and the seller left a dead tree on the property because she wanted the bird to have a place to rest. Most birds will find another home to relax if the dead tree is cut down.

Patricia Feager the Giant was given to me by a Seller, three of them. We have some many on six acres, I am not sure where my husband will plant it, but I know it won't be near the house.  My husband knows at what angle to cut them so they fall exactly where he wants it to fall. In 2005, it was a last minute decision, and I am glad he did cut it. If he had not, it would have fallen on the house.

Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 - Florida is known for hurricane seasons. I can understand why wild forests may need to go. I'm glad to know your seller left a "dead tree on the property." Whether the new buyers will leave it or get it chopped down is anyone's guess.

Personally, I'm on the bird's side - not the developers.

Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 - I just looked up the tree. And you got the GIANTS too! That's quite a height and distance to plant in between. You'll have to let me know what your husband decides to do. There would be no room on my property for one of those trees. What a job it must have been for your hubby to cut a huge tree down near the house! Keep me posted!

Patricia Feager I live on six acres and I have plenty of trees. With hurricane seasons, the main issues are trees being too close to the houses. So a live or dead tree must be removed that is close to the house.

Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 - Thanks for educating me! I can now understand better why live or dead tree must be removed if it's too close to the house. Lightening could also be dangerous!

Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308

Patricia Feager yes, lightening can also be an issue. I just had a seller give me three trees yesterday. Thuja Green Giants, as I looked at the front, back and sides, I thought to myself, where in the world are we going to place such trees. My husband will figure it out, lol. He had to cut a huge tree very near the house when we had the last three major hurricanes back to back, in 2005

Dear Patricia,

We can only suggest changes in public spaces, but we can leave the dead-standing wood on our properties and plant native flowers for the benefit of insects, which become bird food for the feathered visitors (& bats, if you have them). Some friends have to pollinate their tomatoes with a paintbrush. With plenty of insects around, they would not have that problem.

Dear Dorte Engel,

I really appreciate your comment. I do plant native plants in my garden and appreciate them so much! There are many benefits to birds and other creatures for food and shelter when nature is left alone. Yes! Flower Mound does have bats - they are great solutions for mosquitoes! Austin, TX where Dorie Dillard Austin TX lives, celebrates Batfest with nightly viewings from the Congress bridge. This Congress Avenue Bridge is the roost for over one million Mexican free-tailed bats! I think the celebrations are due to begin, but maybe Dorie can share more.

Good morning, Patricia... Charlotte is fortunate to still have one of the best tree canopies as a city in the USA. Our builders have been very careful to save trees for many years now. As for cutting down dead branches... I think that's often done for safety as much as anything else.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I just love tree canopies. We have many in Flower Mound neighborhoods but the trees on open land along the main thoroughfare, were chopped down no thanks to developers.

Patricia Feager we see trees being planted all along our surface streets in many parts of Charlotte.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I love trees! The Town of Flower Mound tree ordinance requires a permit to remove significant trees. They are supposed to have tree preservation plans and rules in place. I've seen changes with new Council Members deals with developers. Residents have noticed and complained.

My brother, a bird lover and naturalist/conservationist, advises against cleaning up my yard in the fall. Leave it for winter bird habitat, he says.

Carol Williams - what a great brother you have with a self-servant heart for wildlife. Your winters are long, and the birds need a lot of food to have for the season. Does he teach and/or get invited to schools to speak about conservation efforts?

Hello, Patricia. Your observation of the bird on the dead branch is a beautiful moment of reflection. It's a wonderful illustration of "one man's junk is another man's treasure," proving that dead branches make excellent habitat and perches, especially for camouflage.

It's natural to feel concerned when development reduces greenspace. While safety often requires removing dead branches near homes (as Nina and Katina pointed out), preserving snags (standing dead trees) in parks and wooded areas is a great conservation goal for wildlife. As Dorte suggested, planting native flowers also helps by providing food for the insects that birds eat!

Patricia so I am curious, were you able to identify what kind of bird it was???

Oct 05, 2025 11:06 AM
Patricia Feager

George Souto - I remain curious! I have no idea what type of bird that is! Perhaps Carol Williams's brother can answer that question because she says her brother is a "bird lover and naturalist/conservationist." The location of the bird was in North Texas in Flower Mound.

Thanks, Carol Williams - I was thinking it was in white hawk breed.

The White-tailed Kite bird is a really cool name. Thanks for researching the identity!!! I hope to see it again.

Hi George Souto and Patricia Feager
I put the picture you provided into Google Lens, and it came back as a White-tailed Kite bird.

Fun fact: My brother can not only identfy birds by sight, but also by their sound without seeing them.

Hi Patricia- it was the cutting down of so many of the dead trees that caused the blue bird populations and other cavity nesters to dwindle.  If you stand quietly under a tree and look up, you'll see the birds in it.  Someone pointed that out to me years ago at Green Cay Wetlands. We would walk through a tree canopy, never noticing the little birds that were above us. Once we stopped, we could see them.

Oct 05, 2025 06:11 PM

Kathy Streib - How interesting! Isn't it wonderful you came up a person who gave you the gift of knowledge about the blue birds in the trees. Once you accepted the gift, your eyes could see better the wonder and the beauty you nearly missed. Your comment was so enlightening.

Thank you.

Brian England - I have no doubt the bird was aware that I was beneath the branch where I do believe I was being watched. After the head turned towards me, the bird flew to the branch in the last photo. That's when I noticed the strong resemblance to being camouflaged against the branch.

Hi Lew Corcoran - Aren't birds amazing! I would love to watch a bird weave a nest- seriously! How do they do it so precisely? How do birds navigate and not get lost during migration? I never saw a bird fight. Did you?  I grew up in Chicago. I never saw a frozen bird or heard of birds getting frost bite. Have you?
