I've always loved a full moon. With a clear sky and a full moon, it is so beautiful and peaceful to me. The October full moon is known as the Harvest Moon because of its proximity to the Autumn equinox, and it's a Supermoon because it coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its 27-day orbit.
A Harvest Moon in October is uncommon — it only happens in select years. Between 1970 and 2050, there are just 18 years when the Harvest Moon falls in October. The last time was 2020; the next will be 2028.
Tonight is the first Supermoon of 2025 and you can see it in its glory at 11:48pm EST.
According to this Forbes article: "The key to watching a moonrise is height. Choose a high vantage point (such as an attic window, the second or third floor of a building, a rooftop or a beach) with an unobstructed eastern horizon."
Space.com 's website has a great outline for the big event. They have a guide on using your telescope or binoculars to hunt down the six Apollo-era human landing sites across the lunar surface. Imagine!? There will be some spectacular photos taken by experts I'm sure that we'll be able to view later this week.
The Farmer's Almanac has actual rituals you can do during the Harvest Moon. Here is the short list:
- Discover the Native American tribe(s) that once lived where you live
- Go outside and pay special attention to an animal you see
- Have a sit-down dinner with family and friends
- Give an offering to the animals
- Make a fire (or light a candle) and say “thank-you"
- Play an instrument, sing, and dance
- Read (or write) a poem
- Quit unhealthy habits
- Pick up trash in nature and make a resolution to use less plastic
