The kitchen has always been the heart of the home, and in 2025, designers are leaning toward warmth, personality, and function. As homeowners across the United States search for timeless styles, experts agree that some cabinet trends have reached their expiration date.

From overly bright color palettes to impractical finishes, here are the kitchen cabinet trends that are losing favor and what to do instead.

1. All White Cabinets

For years, all white kitchens were the gold standard. But this style now feels a little too plain and cold. Designers are encouraging homeowners to mix in warmer tones or natural wood finishes. Combining painted upper cabinets with wooden base cabinets creates balance, texture, and a welcoming atmosphere.

2. Cabinet Skirts

Using fabric skirts instead of cabinet doors was once a quirky and charming touch, but it is no longer practical. Fabric in kitchens collects dust and moisture easily. Designers now recommend reeded or glass front cabinets, which keep the look interesting while remaining durable and easy to clean.

3. Ultra Matte Finishes

Matte finishes can look sleek, but they show every fingerprint and smudge. A satin or semi gloss finish is a better choice for a lively kitchen. It reflects natural light and adds depth, giving your space a clean and polished look without constant upkeep.

4. Fully Built In Cabinets

The modern kitchen is about flexibility and charm. Fully built in cabinetry can make a space feel too uniform. Adding a freestanding piece such as a vintage hutch, butcher block, or reclaimed island introduces warmth and character. This approach also supports more sustainable, personalized design.

5. Non Integrated Appliances

Appliances that stand out visually can interrupt the flow of a well designed kitchen. Hidden or built in appliances create a seamless and refined appearance. Designers are loving built in coffee stations and concealed storage that help keep countertops tidy and stylish.

6. One Color Cabinetry

Cabinets all in one color can look flat and uninspired. Two tone color schemes are more dynamic. Try pairing light upper cabinets with darker bases or mix painted surfaces with natural wood. This combination adds personality and visual depth.

In 2025, kitchen design is all about creating a cozy and intentional space filled with character. By avoiding these outdated cabinet trends, homeowners can achieve a look that feels both modern and timeless.

I was just in a new house.  The kitchen cabinets were brushed stainless steel, easy to clean and not subject to water damage.  I have no idea what the budget line for thsis was but I can see where it could be the kitchen of the future.

Tamra, we are seeing many two-tone kitchen cabinetry this days.   Once cherry cabs were the thing.
