Lake Kittamaqundi, Columbia, MD: The story behind the name.

Lake Kittamaqundi is a 27-acre man-made lake in the heart of Columbia, MD. What's the story behind the name?

The lake was named in 1966 by the Rouse Company, the developer behind the planned community that is Columbia, MD. The name was chosen to honor what was believed to be the first Native American Settlement in Howard County, MD. According to the developers, "Kittamaqundi" meant "meeting place" in the tribe's language.

However, that is not what historical records show¹! Kittamaqundi was actually a 17th-century Piscataway village, named after its chief Kittamaquund, some 40 miles south of Columbia. Some thought Kittamaqundi meant "great beaver place" or "strong bear".

Today, the Town Center and Lake Kittamaqundi are known as the meeting place in Columbia, even though the name's origin is rooted outside of Howard County. Lake Kittamaqundi is more than just a scenic escape; it's a place where nature, culture, and community come together.

From fishing and birdwatching (did you see the heron in the video?), to lakeside concerts and sunset strolls, the lake(front) is a popular destination and the place to be on the 4th of July! Enjoy waterfront dining, explore the trails, or catch live music at the lakefront plaza (or at Merriweather "next door").

Whether you are drawn to the lake for its peaceful views, vibrant energy, or historical roots, Lake Kittamaqundi has it all.

If you'd love to live nearby - or find a home with character and a story worth telling - I would love to help: Andrea (240) 593.2860

P.S. If you've enjoyed catching a glimpse of Lake Kittamaqundi (and Lennon, my Chief Barketing Officer), I'd be super grateful if you could watch it on YouTube and give it a 👍Thank you!

Hello Andrea - thank you for sharing this information about Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia Maryland.  History of an area often inspires developers in their choices.  In this case, it certainly fits and brings together the theme of the community.

It appears that the developer used the tribe to fit their narrative and make it more appealing. But, the theme is certainly very fitting today: the Town Center is Columbia's meeting place. As always, thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a thoughtful comment, Michael Jacobs

How interesting! I guess this means those naming places should make sure of the facts first!

I am not so sure that they weren't aware, Kat Palmiotti! Perhaps they made it fit their narrative to increase appeal. That wasn't necessary; Columbia proved to be popular and is, to this day a desirable community to call home.

Good morning, Andrea... what has struck me reading people's entries to this month's challenge is how often the names of places in our country originate from native american tribes. Here in the Charlotte area we have Waxhaw, named for the Waxhaw Indian Tribe.

It's very interesting, Nina Hollander, Broker! I'm a fan of this month's theme, but I have to make time to read more entries.

Hi Andrea! What a wonderful blend of history and heart! I love how you tied Lake Kittamaqundi’s layered past to its present-day spirit as Columbia’s true “meeting place.” It’s a perfect reminder that even when names evolve in meaning, the sense of community they inspire can be timeless. What a great video also - love your beautiful pup!

I'm also a fan of lake life and wanted to share one of my blue heron photos I took at the lake house a couple of years ago.

Debe Maxwell, CRS! I am so sorry for not responding sooner. I had no idea you left a comment until I got a notification about Hannah's comment!

I don't think Columbia's developer could have imagined just what a meeting place the area around Lake Kittamaqundi would become. There's the lakefront, and the Mall of Columbia across the street. Merriweather, the outdoor concert venue, is next door, and the new Town Center is the newest development in the area, with lots of outdoor activities throughout the year that bring the community together.

Thank you for sharing your heron picture!

Andrea Bedard I did get a quick look at the heron, but I love the dog. What a beautiful community named for Indian Tribes. I am not sure I can pronounce it, but I will try.

My CBO (Chief Barketing Officer) Lennon is the best! Thank you, Hannah Williams. I would assume that most people (including myself) are wondering how to pronounce it correctly!

Maryland has a number of large man made lakes. Lake Linganore in Frederick County was developed around the same time as Lake Kittamaqundi.

Nice history story Andrea. In America we love lakes and there are so many with native American roots. Let's "Kittamaqundi" at the lake. Jeff
