October!

But when October goes....

Autumn is an undeniably beautiful season, but for me, the shortening of the days and the cooler temperatures (although it still feels like summer here in Chester County today) give me a blue feeling.

My pool closed last week, and the task of putting everything away until next summer begins.  If you have a pool, you are wise to have it closed professionally.  In our area, I've been using Great Valley Pools since the pool opened over 20 years ago.  After they do their job, I start with the umbrellas, pool floats, and toys, etc.  It's a sad job for me because I am a summer person.

To counteract the blue feeling, instead of a walk after dinner with my little dog Joey, I try to take a break from work during the day and get some sun on our faces.  Here is a photo of Joey, enjoying the last Sunday by the pool.

October symbolizes change, harvest, and transition as we go from the long and sometimes lazy days of summer into the shorter, cooler months of Autumn. The trees show off their gorgeous fall colors, people decorate their porches and front steps with pumpkins, and our little ones look forward to trick-or-treating. We go from juicy peaches and watermelons to crisp apples and tasty oranges.

I'm trying to talk and type myself into enjoying the fall, in case this isn't obvious.

Could you help me?  What do you like best about Autumn?

Hello Susan, love to see the changing of the colors of the leaves but they do not last long enough for he.  Use to look forward for the first snow since I use to ski but now it is just the beauty of the snow.

I love the first snowfall.  The hush of it.  After that, I'll wait for spring!

I'm always sad to see summer leave as well.  It can be a depressing time of year.  Some ways I try to keep positive is to get on my bike.  Today I biked 7 miles and admired the gorgeous, changing leaves. Later, I plan on taking all my tomatoes that I'm still harvesting and making/canning salsa.

I know that Spring is a time to 'spring clean', but I also like to do it during Autumn.  Remove all the plants that won't survive the New England weather and bring them in, sweep off the leaves from the deck, change out my comforter from the light to the heavier for the cooler nights, etc.  I do enjoy keeping busy.  There is always something to do.

Good evening Susan Mangigian ,

We can enjoy our pools longer so I never have my pool covered until December, I have to admit I always feel a little melancholy wen summer is over but at least I have the holidays that perk me up! I always love spring with the promise of summer right around the corner.

It's been hot here so far in October, but the leaves are daunting around the pool, so it's just easier to close the pool.  Less expensive too, because using the pool heater adds $$.

Hi Susan- living here in Houston, we get to enjoy the warm weather a bit longer and don't have to do much to 'winterize" our homes. It's funny but in the summer when it's hot and humid, we can't wait for cooler weather. Then in February when it can  be cold and windy, we can't wait for it to warm up.

I enjoy getting to wear my cooler weather clothes.

I'm not sure I can live anywhere that's hotter or colder than it is here in PA.

I like Autumn in my area for the cooler temps, but it doesn't seem like we even have a standard Autumn since weather-wise, it's like we only have Spring and Summer, haha.

I'm guessing it gets very hot in the summer there!
