Every week, I like to keep my neighbors, clients, & fellow real estate pros in the loop about what’s happening here in Berea, Kentucky. This week brought a mix of spooky fun, meaningful community milestones, & serious local news.

Local Haunted Barn Raises Funds for Rescue Dogs

A Berea couple has turned their love for Halloween into something that benefits the entire community. Their free haunted barn attraction, Nightmares Haunt, is open every Friday & Saturday from 7–10 p.m. and Sundays from 7–9 p.m. throughout October—including Halloween night.

The walkthrough features multiple rooms inside their barn, fog machines, photo ops, inflatables for little ones, & plenty of spooky surprises. What makes it special is their mission: every donation goes toward supporting Bluegrass Bullies, a local dog rescue.

Last year they raised just over $1,000, and this year’s opening night crowd tripled compared to last year. Nightmares Haunt is located at 190 Old Wallaceton Rd, Berea, KY 40403, & donations are accepted via cash, Venmo, or Cash App.

Safe Haven Baby Box Dedicated at Berea Fire Station 2

In a powerful moment for our community, Berea Fire Station 2 has officially dedicated a Safe Haven Baby Box. This secure, anonymous drop-off option allows parents in crisis to surrender their newborns safely.

When an infant is placed inside the box, Madison County 911 is immediately alerted, allowing firefighters to retrieve the baby quickly. The box is designed for infants less than 30 days old & is part of a statewide initiative to provide life-saving options for parents in crisis.

This dedication was attended by local officials & community members, underscoring Berea’s commitment to caring for its most vulnerable residents.

Threat Prompts Lockdowns at Three Madison County Schools

On September 11, three Madison County schools—Madison Southern High School, Foley Middle School, & Shannon Johnson Elementary—were placed on lockdown following a threat at Madison Southern.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded swiftly, initially believing an active shooter situation was in progress. Thankfully, the investigation determined there was no active danger. One student has since been charged with terroristic threatening in the second degree.

Officials have emphasized that all threats will be fully investigated to ensure student safety.
