Sellers: How to Decorate and Not Frighten Your Buyers Away
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. There are no family pressures,
no mandatory gifts, and no religious toes to step on. And…I love all of the decorations!
When I worked with home sellers during the holidays, a question I was often asked was Can we still put our decorations out?
My answer was always a “Yes” followed by a BUT…
It’s essential to remember the fundamental principles behind staging your house for sale.
FIRST- You don’t want to make your buyers do the eye-bounce. Too many little witches and pumpkins scattered on every flat surface you own prevent the buyer from focusing on the space.
SECOND- Curb appeal is still important. Large blow-up pumpkins and ghosts are cute at night but when they’re deflated during the day, the yard looks trashy.
THIRD- Make sure your buyers can see the front of the house and walk up to the front door without having to navigate spider webs and large spiders.
FOURTH- Resist the urge to “holiday” every room in your home. Save it for your new home.

FIFTH- Don’t overpower your home with pumpkin spice in every room. In fact, the best scent at any time is CLEAN and FRESH.
So, what can you do?
-Keep your decorations simple. Consider one large pumpkin on a
table rather than a dozen mini pumpkins.
-Use the colors of the season, such as a bowl of oranges or small pumpkins placed in an apothecary jar.
-Outside…Add large pots of flowers using the colors of the season. Arrange a small stack of pumpkins of varied sizes on one side of the door.
Adding small touches can help convey the sense of home to your buyers. Besides, selling your home doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun of the holidays.
