Wild Turkeys - and I don't mean Whiskey

By
Industry Observer

Every year, I feed and water the birds that come to our backyard.  This year, since the passing of our loved golden retriever Maverick, we have had a bird sanctuary of sorts in our backyard.

Suddenly we have birds that we don’t recognize, squirrels galore and as of early this summer – Wild Turkeys.

We noticed a couple of grown turkeys wandering the golf course in early Spring.  Then low and behold, the mama and 10 baby turkeys started walking by our back fence.  If you look closely, you can see the mama turkey “eyeing” the bird feeders.

Now the babies are grown and mama has “flown the coop”.  All ten of them come by our yard daily to see if the birds have dropped anything in the flower garden for them.  They feel very comfortable in our backyard and make themselves right at home.

I wonder if they will go under-cover in the next 4 – 6 weeks…

In the meantime, the squirrel who loves our backyard is not at all happy.

Oh my, we have tons of turkeys here as well. It's fun watching their behavior.

They are lunatics.  I wonder when they will move on and quit tormenting the poor squirrel.  LOL

Belinda, what a fun post! It's so entertaining watching the wildlife take over when domestic pets are gone. It sounds like your backyard, especially near the Saddle Rock Golf Course, has become prime territory for that flock of wild turkeys! It’s interesting how they've grown accustomed to the bird feeder droppings, much to the exasperation of the poor squirrel.

I just wonder if something or someone will enjoy one of them for Thanksgiving this year.

About 20 years ago I lived in Harrison, NY- which is about 15-20 miles north of NYC. I was walking around Harrison where I stumbled upon a group of wild turkeys- and they started chasing me. They are pretty large birds and they seemed to be angry. I wasn't sticking around to find out and they followed me for at least a block.

Yes they are huge and they have huge claws.  They have wreaked havoc on the landscape stones in my backyard.

Hi Belinda-   We have lots of squirrels and an occasional raccoon. We also have a bluebird box and every spring we have two or three broods. We too have all kinds of birds.  I love seeing the wildlife.

I love blue birds.  All wildlife runs for the hills when this giant group comes around.

Hello Belinda - this city/suburban guy is not accustomed to seeing wild turkeys on my walks around the neighborhood. Admittedly, I may miss some things from time to time but, I am certain they would make their presence known.

The giant feathered friends are hard to miss.  I am always amazed that the number of them remains the same.  Surely some hungry mountain lion would enjoy a nice poultry dinner.

Good morning Belinda. Nothing like seeing nature. The squirrel thinks they have invaded his territory and should find a territory of their own. He is watching. Enjoy your view.

It is strange how the little squirrel is not afraid of them.  I have seen him chase them but they dont go far.

Hi Belinda... great to "see" you! Now I know why there are so few birds around my yard... it's because of our dog. But even if we didn't have Bingo, we wouldn't have wild turkeys... what an amazing thing to watch each day.

Yes, poor Maverick passed away in March of this year.  Without the smell of a possible foe, the wildlife has claimed our yard as theirs.

Good Tuesday morning, Belinda. Thank you very much for sharing your photographs.

We have limited wildlife in our neighborhood.

Some days I wish I had limited wildlife as well, but I have to admit, it is very entertaining.

Belinda seeing your post today makes me realize how much I've missed you being in the rain.  So glad you posted this FUN post!  Wild turkeys now how cool is that!  I can see the Mamma eyeing the feeder.  And watching all the babies grow up - love it.  It's kind of like our backyard full of birds.  No turkeys........😙

Oh, my goodness, Belinda Spillman - your backyard wildlife sanctuary is absolutely alive and well stocked with activities and babies too! I've been writing my daughter about my unusual backyard observations, but mine are nothing like yours!

Your photos touched my heart! I would be so happy too, if that was my yard! Every morning, I get up early, open my bedroom window and start writing on my writing table. This year, I had a Blue Jay that landed on my windowsill on the outside of my bedroom window. I never saw any bird come that close in my lifetime! I had a mama rabbit and babies and I swear, when I talked to the mama, I saw her ears move and then I'd see her mouth moving. When I stopped talking, the rabbit appeared to be listening. When I shut up, I saw the rabbit's mouth move up and down as if talking back to me! I had, I think a baby bat on my window screen (same window) too. I had a lot more wildlife wonders, but nothing compared to your experience!

Seeing nature come to us is the thrill of a lifetime!!! I really liked the turkeys that came to visit you! And that picture of the squirrel was precious! Awe, you live in a Paradise and it's so beautiful. Wildlife loves you!!!
