Journaling for Friday - Feeling Good

Remember when ice cream made you feel good and not guilty? And remember when you didn't have to count calories?

If you were lucky, do you remember when you drove in a spiffy car behind the wheel, with dice hanging from the rearview mirror, with no navigation system, driving with the top down, listening to music you could sing the words, and you felt completely liberated!!!

Remember playing Hide & Go Seek and not being afraid to hide from your friends or having parents around?

Remember learning how to roller skate or ice skate? And remember when falling down was no big deal.

Remember sharing popcorn and drinking soda was a treat while watching a movie with your friends while waiting for the guy to fix the movie projector?

Remember going to the Drive-In on your first date? Or going to the Drive-In with a bunch of friends, perhaps some kids were hiding in the trunk of the car?

Remember when Halloween was fun and remember eating all that candy? Wasn't it fun to wait for it to get dark outside, and go trick or treating?

Remember eating Pizza and watching holiday movies or playing games at home with the family or friends at sleep overs?

Remember when you went to the beach and did not have to worry about Jaws!

Remember when teenagers had fun and nobody got into trouble? Remember when clothes and hair didn't matter but being with good friends mattered!

Happy Friday!

A beautiful life is when you were happy with

yourself, no one was watching you,

you could be trusted, and you did the right thing.

Except for the dice and top-down and except for eating all the candy (my parents had guidelines on what and how much we could eat!), I remember it all. It brought a smile to my face.

Kat Palmiotti - Our life experiences were unique and so much fun compared to today's youth. My aunt and uncle owned a Candy Store. I walked to school (both grade school and high school) and passed a lot of Candy Stores that were open before and after school. Since my grade school did not have a school cafeteria, my mom gave us lunch money, and I spent most of my change on Penny Candy with just enough left for a hotdog and French fries.

Isn't it wonderful to have fond memories of our childhood. I don't think a kid today did (or will) have the same types of experiences. I know my granddaughter doesn't.

Good morning Patricia. Oh, the memories your post brought back. But no dice on the mirror. As for calories the wife and I just spent a few days out of town where calories did not matter. So, visiting an old fashioned ice cream store I had a chocolate malt. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - I'm glad your day trip turned back the clock, and you didn't have to care about calories! I recently stopped at Braum's and had a Chocolate Malt. It was sooooooooooooooooooo good! I rode in cars as a passenger since I didn't get my license until much later in life as an adult. All the old movies, like Grease had cars with dice - they are still fun to watch!

I love seeing smiling faces and all of the old photos are wonderful.  The only guilt I find in that ice cream is the cone, so I would have it in a bowl and enjoy without any guilt since I know that I would be consuming "good" fats, haha.

Brian England - My favorite was a Banana split! There was also an Ice Cream shop called 31 flavors. Now that was fun!

Hi Patricia,

I remember all of those things, except the dice hanging from the mirror. My favorite was when I could eat ice cream (and anything else) without worrying about gaining weight. That was a fun trip down Memory Lane.

Carol Williams - The old movies like Grease had dice in their cars. I rode as a passenger because I didn't get my license until later in life. My first car as an adult was an old 1967 GTO Convertible. But by then it was the late 70's and I was married with children. Before getting married as a teen, the friends I had who did drive cars were different ages. Driving in the back seat - no seat belt! Experiencing the driver push the pedal to the metal was exhilarating! Feeling the wind blow my long hair across the face was amazing! Those were the days I cherished!!!

Patricia, Yes I remember. Wasn't if fun? Too bad the kids of today only have their heads down looking at their phones.

Patricia besides the big dice hanging from the review mirror, you had to have the little doll or dog on the dashboard with the head bobbing up and down .... LOL

Oh my gosh, George Souto! I completely forgot about the little dog with the bobbing head inside people's old cars!!! That's so funny! Now I remember why I hated that dog image that popped up on AR when there were technical issues - which I hope I never see again!

I hope I don't have nightmares about that dog!

Hi Patricia,  oh yes, I remember many of the things you mentioned. My cousins and I played outside until dark . We rode the bus into downtown Houston to go to the movies. I am glad to say I had a very normal, simple, and happy childhood.

Kathy Streib - I must have been about 11 when I started riding the buses to get to the beaches around Lake Michigan with my friend who lived across the street from me. There were two Movie Theaters to choose from within walking distance from my house where I grew up. I don't see kids that young getting around the town without their parents anymore.

We really were lucky!

This post felt like flipping through a scrapbook of joy, Patricia Feager. Thank you for sharing such vivid, heartwarming snapshots of simpler times. It’s a gentle reminder that happiness often lives in the little things we didn’t know we’d miss. Really appreciate you putting this out there.

These memories are quintessentially American. Growing up in the UK they were different, yet the same. The innocence of the young.

Ellie McIntire - Isn't it wonderful to know that whether kids were growing up in America or the UK they were happier because the age of innocence did exist!

I was happy to learn this post brought back happy memories for you too!

The memories were great, watching for street lights to turn on before having to go inside, ice cream from a hand-cranked churn, full of peaches from the orchard, life was simpler but better.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 - Ah! Watching the street lights to turn on to know when it was time to go home was so much better because we didn't have to rely on cell phones or wristwatches to know what time it was. Eating hand-cranked churn ice cream whether with lots of fresh peaches or cherries was simply delicious! We were the lucky ones!!!

I think that there’s a lot to be said about people who don’t enjoy their ice cream. I think there’s a bit of a metaphor for life there.

Debra Leisek - Being able to celebrate childhood with friends and family just having simple pleasures and fun made life worth living. There is nothing else to compare today's ice cream with to real home made ice cream!

Yes! Yes! Yes! These memories are truly worth remembering!!!
