Seasons change, so should your passwords

By

Did you know that October is Cybersecurity Month?  I didn't!  (hence the reason I'm blogging about it more than halfway through October!)

It turns out that National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is an annual campaign that started in 2004.  Where have I been??  This month is dedicated to promoting cybersecurity best practices and educating the public about cyber threats.

Here are some smart ways to protect your password:

  • Focus on length, not complexity, by creating a passphrase that is at least 15 characters long.  They're easier to remember and harder to crack.
  • Enable 2-step verifications
  • Consider using a trusted password manager to strengthen your online security.

According to the Awareness Days website, here are more ways to raise awareness and adopt best practices to strengthen digital security:

  • Educate Yourself: Learn about common cyber threats, such as phishing, malware, and ransomware, and how to recognize and avoid them.
  • Update Software: Ensure that your devices, operating systems, and software applications are up to date with the latest security patches.
  • Back Up Data: Regularly back up your important data to secure and accessible locations to prevent data loss in case of cyberattacks.
  • Share Knowledge: Educate friends, family, and colleagues about cybersecurity best practices and encourage them to participate in NCSAM.
  • Stay Informed: Follow cybersecurity news, blogs, and resources to stay updated on the latest threats and security tips.

Stay Safe Online!

Kelly

Really good advice.  But this can seem very overwhelming at times.

Besides all of my personal accounts including banking, I'm also a mortgage banker with an overwhelming number of lending sites and programs I also have to deal with.

I use my online password manager to keep track, but maybe it's just me with almost a hundred sites and passwords to deal with this could end up almost being a full time job.   LOL. JMHO.

But appreciate your advice.

Thank you for your post and reminder.

Wayne L. Brown I can imagine the number of sites you handle regularly.  It is difficult to change them all!

Hi Kelly, what a fantastic and timely post for Cybersecurity Month! 💡 It's a great reminder that focusing on a long passphrase, as you suggested, is much more effective than a short, complex password. Thanks for sharing these vital tips on 2-step verification and backing up data—they're truly essential for safety online!

This was such a timely and eye-opening read, Kelly McGovern. Thank you for sharing practical tips with a dash of personality. I didn’t realize how overdue my password habits were until now, so I’m genuinely grateful for the nudge. Appreciate you making cybersecurity feel a little less intimidating and a lot more doable!

Changing passwords is very important, although most require odd combinations like one letter, one symbol that can't be a certain one, at least 8 letters, etc. And then I forget which one I've used! But very important message; thank you for the nudge.

Good morning Kelly. Now I know October is Cyberspace month. My memory had better never fail as I have so many passwords I would be screwed. And, there are some sites where I change my password often. Enjoy your day.
