  5. Go to the bathroom before setting out to trick or treat.

  6. Don't let your costume be a tripping hazard by letting it drag on the ground; make sure your shoe laces are tied tight, as they can be a tripping hazard too. Wearing comfortable shoes can help alot too!

  7. Stay on sidewalks; walk don't run. No sidewalks? Then be sure to walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic. Always check for cars before crossing a street.

Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 that may be, Katina... but some of my favorite childhood memories were trick or treating on Halloween. I'd hate to take it away from kids.

Hi Nina,
Excellent list. Now, if only there were a tip for me trying to resist the leftover candy. I do always test it before giving any out, though... just to be sure it's safe! 😂

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I totally agree, Jeff. I remember trick or treating in the 1950's in NY City... we went on our own with friends... no rules, no parents, etc.

Great list of Halloween tips Nina!  We don't get many kids anymore - since the whole covid mess.  Now schools and churces have parties and that's what they enjoy.  We do get just a few little ones in their costumes and that is SO FUN!  I love asking them all about their costumes!  And of course Norman wants to be petted too!

Oct 19, 2025 10:34 AM

Anna "Banana" Kruchten hi Anna... fortunately, our neighborhood continues to have lots of trick or treaters in addition to a Halloween Day parade through the neighborhood and a party for the kiddos at the club house. Those little kids are just so adorable in their costumes.

I know!  It's my favorite seeing how excited the little ones are!  So darn adorable!

Hi Nina- I love this!!! And, I love Halloween. In our previous neighborhoods, we'd have over 125 children.  Parent, yes, please watch your children. We had a little boy run past me when he saw Larry working on his RC plane. He was so interested but his parents were not right behind him.  They caught up with him and said that his uncle flew RC planes and that's why he ran into the house.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... with all the parents watching their little ones, it's like one big block party here moving through the neighborhood. I once had a little girl just come through the front door, walk through my entire first floor and then turn to me and say "very nice here." Her mother just about died of embarrassment. :)

Nina, Halloween is sure different today than when we were kids.   I don't remember having nefarious people try to do stuff to the candy, or anything.  It was just fun.

Joan Cox you said a mouthful, Joan! So many things have changed and not for the better since we were kids.

George Souto good morning, George... exactly. And these days even a bigger shame that we need to address these issues.

We don't get trick or treaters although every year I buy a bag of candy "Just in case." Of course, it's always something Anthony likes!

Kat Palmiotti hi Kat... the last two neighborhoods we lived in were not overrun with trick or treaters. In my current neighborhood it's a major event. I try not to buy too much candy that would be left over as my husband doesn't eat candy and I don't want to be tempted.

Those are really good tips!  I am still deciding on whether or not to hand out candy, haha.  I hate having all of the leftover candy that goes to waste.  Perhaps I need to find something healthy to hand out, so I can eat all of the leftovers myself, haha.

Oct 20, 2025 06:15 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Brian England there are places where you can donate leftover candy. Check them out in your area.

Oct 20, 2025 06:21 AM

I think that candy has changed quite a bit since you had it when you were growing up Nina Hollander, Broker and if you compared labels with the ingredients, you would find that there is indeed poison in the candy that is made these days.  When it leads to diabetes, cancer, or other things that aren't good, I would certainly consider that poisonous, haha.

Oct 20, 2025 07:41 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Brian England hi Brian... I don't think I'd go so far as to call candy poison. I grew up on it and seem to be doing fine. Our grands certainly ate plenty of it as kids... they are all healthy as horses today. It's really all about moderation.

Oct 20, 2025 06:27 AM
Brian England

I feel bad about doing that Nina Hollander, Broker since if I feel that the candy is poisonous (too much sugar, too many chemicals, etc.), I would feel guilty providing that to someone else, haha.
