It surprised me as well George Souto since I have never worried about paying off my mortgage because I like the tax credit I get, haha.

When we bought our current house, the desire was to make sure it was paid off before we retired. We took a 15-year mortgage, but I made a double payment every month and we took 7 years off the mortgage and closed it out early. To keep the tax deductions, we took out a HELOC so that we could have liquidity and a write off as well.
