Costumed Canines, Family Fun, and Fall Magic in Downtown Crossing

When Dogs Dress to Impress, You Don’t Want to Miss It

If your idea of a perfect fall afternoon includes wagging tails, tiny tutus, and a whole lot of Halloween spirit, then mark your calendar for Saturday, October 25, 2025. From 12:00pm to 3:00pm, Downtown Crossing transforms into a tail-wagging wonderland for the Doggone Halloween Pet Parade—Boston’s most beloved Halloween costume contest for pups and their people.

This free, outdoor event is more than just a parade. It’s a full-on celebration of creativity, community, and canine cuteness. Whether you're a dog parent, a costume enthusiast, or just someone who loves a good laugh, this is one of those events that sticks with you long after the last treat is tossed.

What to Expect: Paws, Prizes & Pure Joy

From the moment the parade kicks off at Summer Street and winds its way up Washington Street, you’ll be surrounded by a sea of costumed pups and their equally festive humans. Think hot dogs in buns, tiny pirates, ghostly greyhounds, and even the occasional four-legged lobster.

But it’s not just about the costumes—though those are worth the trip alone. You’ll find a dog-themed vendor village packed with goodies, a photo booth to capture your pup’s best angles, face painting for the kiddos, and free treats for all. Yes, even you.

And if you’re feeling competitive, there’s a prize category with your name on it. Awards will be handed out for:

  • Best Costume
  • Cutest Costume
  • Scariest Costume
  • Best Dog & Human Duo
  • Best Dog & Child Duo

So go ahead—get creative. Matching outfits? Bonus points. Homemade costumes? Even better.

Why This Event Matters (and Why You’ll Love It)

There’s something magical about seeing your neighborhood come alive with laughter, wagging tails, and shared joy. Events like this remind you that community isn’t just a buzzword—it’s something you feel when you’re standing shoulder to shoulder with strangers, all smiling at a dachshund dressed as Dracula.

If you’ve never been, this is your year. And if you’ve attended before, you already know: it’s the kind of event that makes you fall in love with Boston all over again.

Good morning Lew. What a great event for those who can get their dog to wear a costume for any length of time. Enjoy your day.

Haha, right? The real trick isn’t the costume, it’s convincing your pup it’s not a trap, Wayne Martin 🐾🎃. Thanks for the kind words and good vibes, they made me smile. Hope your day’s just as festive and fun!

Lew Corcoran  I have not seen or heard of a pet parade.  That would be a fun thing to watch.

It’s one of those wonderfully oddball events you don’t realize you need until you’re grinning at a dachshund dressed as a hot dog, George Souto 🐶🌭. Thanks for chiming in, it really is a treat to watch!

Thanks so much for the warm wishes, Roy Kelley 🧡. There’s something special about soaking up the local charm, especially when it involves dogs in tiny capes and tutus. Hope your weekend’s packed with good vibes and maybe a little mischief too 🎃🐾.

How fun is this?!  Too bad I have to miss it.  I also love the different categories of competition.  Clever!

The costume categories are half the fun, Kelly McGovern. Who knew “Best Historical Figure” would go to a pug in powdered wig 🐶👑. Sorry you’ll miss it this time, but your comment totally added to the joy. Thanks for the kind words and clever eye! 🎃✨

Hello Lew and I remember playing the drums in the marching band in high school and being in 5 to 6 Halloween parade every year.

Lew, wouldn't this be fun to attend.   People love their dogs, and to get them all dressed up is another thing!

Totally agree, Joan Cox, there's something hilariously heartwarming about seeing pups strut their stuff in tiny costumes 🐾🎃. Thanks for sharing that spark of joy. It made me smile just picturing it. Hope you get to catch the parade in person sometime... it's a riot!

I am not much of a pet guy myself, but I think I would still enjoy seeing the pet parade, haha.

Even if you're not a pet person, Brian England, you have to admit there's just something about a dachshund in a hot dog costume that can win anyone over 🐾🎃 Thanks for keeping an open mind and sharing a smile!

Lew Corcoran - I used to attend Greyhound Birthday Parties once a year. The challenge was getting the pets to keep their costumes on. Nonetheless, it was fun and to make comparisons about how dogs act like children. They have personalities and feelings too!

I think it would be fun to watch a Pet Parade. Although I wouldn't expect to see perfect dogs, like in a Championship Competition, I would enjoy seeing pets who are very much family oriented. Funny or disciplined - you gotta love them all!!!

Oct 25, 2025 10:11 AM
Lew Corcoran

Aww, thank you for sharing that memory, Patricia Feager! Greyhound birthday parties sound like a riot, especially with the costume chaos 😂. And you're so right, pets bring that same messy, lovable energy kids do. Whether they're prancing proudly or just trying to wiggle out of their outfits, it's all part of the charm 🐾.

Lew Corcoran - try to put a costume on an animal and they will quickly show you who is the boss! It's the same when you take a dog to the Vet and they give you a cone expecting you to keep it on their dog.

Thank you for sharing this super fun local event. I must say this is my kind of parade. My wife is constantly rescuing animals, and I confess it sometimes feels like I live on a small farm. This parade is sure to bring lots of smiles and laughter.

That sounds like a house full of heart and happy chaos, Gregory Manns, Palm Springs Area Realtor 🐾😊. Thanks so much for sharing your story and for the kind words. This parade really is a joyful little gem. Hope it brings a few belly laughs your way! 🎃🐶

Lew, I bet this doggie parade was a lot of fun.  Dogs are fun to watch even when they are not in costume!  Happy Halloween!

Totally agree, Gloria Todor. There's something about dogs just being their goofy selves that makes any day brighter 🐾. The parade was a riot of wagging tails and wobbly costumes, but honestly, even the pups just trotting along stole the show. Thanks for sharing the Halloween spirit! 🎃
