North Carolina versus Montana

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with eXp Commercial, Referral Divison RRE-BRO-LIC-75443

This Tuesday's Zoom call featured Debe Maxwell, CRS. She told us all about what makes North Carolina special, and at the end, our "homework" for the week was either to share the most interesting thing we learned OR compare some of the North Carolina facts with our own state. So I decided to do the latter!

So the first factoid I wanted to compare: % of the state covered by forestland. In North Carolina, it's 60%. Perhaps surprisingly, only 28% of Montana is covered by forest, BUT Montana's 28% equates to 25M acres, while North Carolina's acreage with forest is less with 18.7M. And since two thirds of Montana is prairie, the 28% really isn't that surprising!

The second comparison is also a geographical item. Debe shared that there are 1,500 lakes in North Carolina that have 10+ acres. In Montana, I couldn't find anything that counted lakes the same way, but I did find something that indicated we have 3,223 named lakes in Montana. Most of the lakes I've been to are definitely more than 10 acres, so I'm going to assume most of the 3,200+ lakes in MT are bigger than that!

And then there are the amount of freshwater streams by miles. North Carolina has 37,000+ miles which is quite impressive!!! Montana has almost five times the amount with 169,829 miles of streams.

So take a look at the following chart, and what do you think?

Who wins the North Carolina versus Montana bout, round 1?

Item North Carolina Montana
% of State w/forest 60% 28%
 - Acres of forestland 18.7M 25M
Lakes w/10+ acres 1,500 3,223 named lakes - don't track by size
Miles of freshwater streams 37,000+ 169,829

Kat, Wow, both states have such a strong outdoor profile; Montana’s waterways are impressive, but North Carolina’s forest coverage is hard to top. It may be a draw!

Kat, nice comparison of Montana to North Carolina, and would have thought there was more forestland.

This shows why it's not higher - most of our state is flat and not forested.

Hi Kat,

That is interesting! and very surprising! I would have thought the forests in Montana would be bigger than that!  What about the mountains?--More in Montana than  North Carolina--Maybe more and higher too?

I love stuff like this--too many other topics take our attention away from the beauty and grandeur of this country. Michigan is where I grew up and it always surpised me that there were not as many lakes as other states---it is known as "The Great Lakes State" because their lakes are so huge but they each dump water from one into the other. Lake Huron, Lake Erie Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario are all huge compared to many other lakes, but Minnisota takes the "Land of Lakes" title. I love this post--it is so refreshing!

Thank you Paula Hathaway, REALTOR, LBA ! Both states do have a lot of mountains - North Carolina's biggest one is Mt Mitchell at 6,684 feet. Montana's biggest one is Granite Peak at 12,807 feet. I do believe Montana has more.

Interesting facts that show similarities in forested areas, yet differences in volume, Kat. Makes me wonder how my state compares to the two.

Supposedly your forest land is 18.3M acres, and about 30% of the state is forested Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! !

Kat Palmiotti - You made an excellent comparison between Montana and North Carolina. As you know, I was considering moving to Montana, but did you know before moving to Texas, I spent three weeks traveling all over the state of North Carolina and I met with realtors too! Both states have everything I wanted but did not get. I think it's important to really do a deep dive and by process of elimination and income, make the best decision where to live or to make the best of what you've got!

What a fun and eye-opening comparison, Kat Palmiotti. Thanks for breaking it down so clearly! I really appreciated the way you layered facts with context, making it easy to see how numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. Your post sparked curiosity and gave me a fresh lens on both states, so thank you for sharing it!

Hello Kat - winningness whether measured by states or statuses from any source can be subjective even when the facts may be agreed upon.  Celebrate the positives!
