Clean Out & Drop Off: National Prescription Take Back Day, Oct. 25th

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty ~ 512.750.6899

When my Geno passed, one of the things I made sure to do was take back all of his unused medications. It gave me peace knowing they wouldn’t end up in the wrong hands or cause harm. Many of us have old prescription bottles sitting in drawers or medicine cabinets, and National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is the perfect reminder to clear them out safely.

This Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., law enforcement and healthcare partners across the Austin area, including Travis County and St. David’s HealthCare, will host free, anonymous collection events.

Why It Matters

Most people don’t realize that many abused prescription drugs come from friends or family, often right from home medicine cabinets. Disposing of medications properly helps keep them out of the wrong hands and protects against accidental overdoses, especially with children and pets around. It also keeps our environment cleaner by preventing drugs from entering our water system when thrown away or flushed.

Austin-Area Drop-Off Locations

Kyle

  • Kyle Public Safety Center: 1700 Kohlers Crossing

Lakeway

  • Lakeway Police Department (during Lake Travis Public Safety Day)

Leander

  • Leander Medical Plaza: Hosted by St. David’s HealthCare & Leander Police Department

Travis County

  • Constable Precinct 1: 4717 Heflin Ln, Ste 127

Before You Go

What’s Accepted: Tablets, capsules, and other solid prescription drugs (some sites also take over-the-counter or pet meds).
🚫 Not Accepted: Syringes, sharps, illicit drugs, and liquids, check with your drop-off site to confirm.
📝 Tip: Remove your personal info from bottles, or pour pills into a sealable plastic bag for easier drop-off.

Can’t Make It Saturday?

No worries, many police departments and pharmacies have year-round drop-off kiosks. You can find one anytime using the DEA’s Public Disposal Locations Search Tool.

Let’s do our part, Canyon Creek! Taking just a few minutes to clear out unused medications helps protect our families, friends, and neighbors, and that’s something we can all feel good about.

Good morning Dorie. Although our town does not ahave a program, a town nearby has safe disposal containers outside many of their fire stations year around. Great program. Enjoy your day.

It’s a great program and so important. Most people believe it’s ok to flush medication down the toilet!  Wrong!  It gets into our groundwater. Disposing of medication properly is so important! Great advice here.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - Flower Mound does this too - once a year. Based on the mission our President is on today, I think the National Prescription Take Back Program needs to be extended and offered more frequently. That way, more people would get it in their heads to not let their prescriptions fall into the wrong hands.

This is a great shout out for action!

Dorie our Health Department provides bags that old prescription drugs can be put in, and they have a chemical in them that when you add water, they dissolve the drugs so they can be disposed of safely.

Prescription drugs are so dangerous, even for those who think they are taking them for the right purposes.  Natural remedies are much better and actually cure the issue, rather than just mask the symptoms.
