Comparisons with North Carolina and Connecticut

The presentation on the Zoom call this week was on the lifestyle of the residents of North Carolina and was presented by Debe Maxwell.

The homework was to offer some comparisons between the 2 states.

It can't be done on size, as North Carolina is 9 1/2 times larger than Connecticut and its population is 3 times larger.

There are similarities with the land, as there are parts of the Appalachian trail that run along the Western side of both states.

State Birds:

The state bird for Connecticut is the Robin, most distinguishable by its orange breast and often sought in mid-March as harbinger of spring.

The state bird of North Carolina is the cardinal the male being most recognizable for its distinguished red color.

While the female is important, she remains less showy and does have some red in her beak, but possibly for protection to the nests, is not as easily spotted.

They birds are easily recognizable and are very common to both states.

State Trees

The state tree for North Carolina is the pine tree with the longleaf pine most often depicted. The are very common to the south and a stand of pines is a most beautiful sight.

The state tree of Connecticut is the white oak and also known as the charter oak, and is the reason we are referred to often as the Constitution state.

The Connecticut charter is the model for the US Constitution, and the original charter was hidden by state residents when the English were present and sought to get it and destroy the charter to demoralize the rebels The charter was hidden within an oak and never found. For this reason, the tree is recognized for its importance.

State Mammal

The state mammal for North Carolina is the grey squirrel noted for its thriftiness and courage. It is also useful as many of the nuts they bury will reforest an area on its own.

The state mammal for Connecticut is the sperm whale as it is a symbol of the whaling history of the state and also chosen as it was an endangered species.

There are other similarities to the state for the industriousness of its people and the diversity of the industries that operate in both regions.

Hello Ed - in similarities as well as differences, we can find the uniqueness that makes each state special in its own way.  Thank you for sharing some additional insight into Connecticut.

Ed with the Municipal Election going on, I did not have time to do a comparison, so I am happy to see you represented our state by doing one.  GOOD JOB!

Wow!  That robin looks incredible and I think I like its look more than I do the cardinal, although the cardinal is an amazing looking bird as well, haha.

Hi Ed,

It’s interesting how much you can learn about a place just by looking at its state symbols.  Washington is known as the Evergreen State, for our many non-deciduous trees. The Western Hemlock is officially our state tree but we have many varieties of firs, pines, and cedars.. among others.

Ed, I really enjoyed your thoughtful comparisons between Connecticut and North Carolina! 🌲🐿️  (Although I like Connecticut's mammal more than our little nuisances!! They're cute but, annoying! LOL)

You tied together history, symbolism and nature so beautifully—especially the story of the Charter Oak and how it connects to our nation’s roots.

Thank you for sharing your well-researched and engaging take in your 'homework' from this week’s Zoom presentation!

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - I am so impressed with your comparison between the state of North Carolina and where you live in Connecticut. As I mentioned before, I never visited Connecticut. What a fascinating state! I had no idea the Appalachian Mountains are on your western side. Did not know you even bordered the ocean and had whales! The story about your State Tree tugged at my heart! That's a lot of valuable history and interesting observations to disclose about your great State of Connecticut!
