First Responders Day…

First Responders Day…

Today, we celebrate the many who put their lives on the line for all of us. It is First Responders Day… and that includes firefighters, emergency medical technicians, law enforcement officers, paramedics, SEARCH and RESCUE teams, and 911 dispatchers.

As of last October, 2024, there are 4.6 million men and women who stand ready to protect and serve their communities.

Many here have family members who have or are serving in their communities.

We know the sacrifices first responders and their families make. But did you know…

*676 First responders died by suicide in the U.S. between 2015 and 2017

*Sudden cardiac death is the leading cause of line-of-duty fatalities among U.S. firefighters.

Inhaling smoke and hazardous chemicals, stress, and carrying heavy firefighting equipment add to their cardiac issues.

*Police officers have a 30-70 times higher risk of sudden cardiac death.

First responders are wired to help others before themselves. As a result, their own injuries or health concerns often go unaddressed.

What can you and I do?

  • Share your heartfelt “Thank you” with them
  • Support local first responder organizations by donating or volunteering at events
  • Show up at local events honoring first responders

Good morning, Kathy... I knew if anyone would post about First Responders today, it would be you. May God bless them all. They are so under-appreciated for all they do.

Good morning Kathy. Many never think about their service until they are the one's being rescued by a first responder. All should be thankful for their service ll the time. enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin Not many of them discuss what they see. Over the years, I think I've heard just one story from my brother.

And search and rescue organizations should be included as well! (They are often left out!).

In my area, we have a non-profit chaplain group that goes to all the disasters to help those involved, but also to help first responders. The suicide number above made me think of mentioning it - first responders need help but often won't ask for it.

Kat Palmiotti I am remiss in not including Search and Rescue teams. And...I added them above. Thank Anthony for me!!

I remember during Hurricane Harvey, the "Cajun Navy" came from Louisiana to help with rescue efforts.

What they see takes its toll .

Far too many show so little respect for those that put their lives on the line to help others.

I couldn't even imagine being a first responder myself, the gruesome things that they likely see.

Brian England it takes a special mindset to see what you and I don't have to see daily.

People take them for granted until they are needed, then when they turn up those in need are so appreciative.

I agree Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543     I saw a Texas Ranger in the market today and smiled and said hello. He looked like the kind of person you'd want taking care of the community.
