Need A Larger Home For School?
Finding The Perfect Home For Homeschooling Families In Greater Charlotte
Homeschooling has become one of the fastest-growing education trends across America—including right here in the Greater Charlotte area. Families are discovering that teaching at home provides flexibility, family time, and customized learning. But as homeschooling grows, so does the need for more space at home.
If your kitchen or dining room table has turned into a classroom, art studio, and science lab all in one, it might be time to start looking for a home with room for school.
“When the atmosphere encourages learning, the learning is inevitable.”

The Rise of Homeschooling—How It’s Changing Real Estate Needs
Over the past few years, homeschooling rates have nearly doubled. Parents are creating learning environments that fit their children’s unique styles and interests. But what many families quickly realize is that traditional home layouts don’t always fit this new lifestyle.
Today’s homeschool families are looking for:
Dedicated learning rooms with natural light and plenty of storage.
Bonus rooms, lofts, or finished basements that can double as classrooms or study areas.
Home offices for online learning and virtual co-ops.
Outdoor space for science projects, playtime, and exploration.
If your home is feeling tight, it’s not just clutter—it’s your life expanding.
Homeschooling in North Carolina and the Greater Charlotte Area
Homeschooling isn’t just a national trend—it’s thriving right here in North Carolina.
As of the 2024–2025 school year, North Carolina had some 101,8800 registered homeschooling households. That represents an estimated 165,243 students (based on 1.6 students per homeschool). However, North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE) estimate the number could be closer to 203,760 students if you assume two students per homeschool.
In 2021–2022, 8.9% of North Carolina’s K–12 students were homeschooled—one of the highest rates in the nation. While there was a slight dip between the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 school years, homeschooling levels remain significantly higher than before the pandemic.
In the Greater Charlotte area, the homeschooling trend is just as strong:
Mecklenburg County saw a 19% increase in homeschooled students between 2019–2020 and 2020–2021.
Nearby counties like Lincoln, Union, and Iredell experienced modest growth.
Cabarrus and Gaston Counties saw slight decreases, but homeschooling levels remain elevated overall.
Overall, the Greater Charlotte region mirrors the State’s pattern—steady homeschooling growth with only minor fluctuations since the pandemic surge.
When “Home” Becomes the Classroom
The heart of homeschooling success often lies in having the right environment. A well-organized, flexible home helps children focus, learn, and thrive. From quiet corners for reading to creative areas for hands-on projects, space matters.
If your family is growing—or your homeschool program is—upsizing to a home designed for homeschooling families may be one of the best decisions you make.
